The NFL community is in mourning after the sudden passing of Nick Mangold, the iconic center of the New York Jets. Mangold, 41, passed away on Saturday, October 25, 2025. Fans, teammates, and the entire sports world have expressed shock and sadness over the news.

Jets Announce Loss of a Star

The New York Jets confirmed Mangold’s death in an official statement. Owner Woody Johnson and Vice Chairman Christopher Johnson highlighted his contributions both on and off the field.

“Nick was the embodiment of consistency, strength, and leadership,” the Jets said. “For over a decade, he anchored our offensive line with unmatched skill and determination. His contributions on the field were extraordinary, but his character, humility, and humor off the field made him unforgettable.”

Fighting Kidney Disease

Nick Mangold had battled kidney disease for years. In a letter shared on October 14, 2025, he revealed that a genetic defect diagnosed in 2006 led to chronic kidney disease. He wrote about undergoing dialysis and expressed gratitude for the support from his family and friends.

Mangold had sought a kidney transplant from a donor with type O blood, as no family member could donate at the time. Tragically, he passed away just 11 days after requesting help publicly.

Tributes Flood In

The NFL world reacted quickly to Mangold’s death. Former teammates, coaches, and media personalities shared heartfelt condolences. The Jets honored him on social media, changing their profile picture to a white No. 74 on a green background—a nod to Mangold’s jersey number.

Ohio State Football, where Mangold played in college, expressed sorrow over his passing, extending condolences to his family. Former coach Jim Tressel described him as loyal, hardworking, and loving—a true friend, son, and father.

Darrelle Revis, Mangold’s former teammate, shared emotional memories of lacing up his cleats every Sunday with him. “I will miss you and forever cherish our moments in the locker room,” Revis said.

NFL Figures Remember Nick Mangold

Many in the NFL highlighted Mangold’s impact. Former Jets coach Rex Ryan called him the “heart and soul” of the team. Aaron Glenn, another former teammate, offered prayers to Mangold’s family. Broadcaster Pat McAfee called him a legendary figure and an exemplary father, husband, and teammate.

Other notable figures, including Cris Carter, Tom Pelissero, Mike Garafolo, and Ian Rapoport, shared their grief and prayers for Mangold’s family. His legacy, both on the field and off, has left a lasting impression across the league.

Remembering a Legend

Nick Mangold’s career was marked by dedication, skill, and leadership. A three-time All-Pro center, he was also inducted into the New York Jets Ring of Honor. Beyond football, he was admired for his humility, kindness, and humor.

As fans and colleagues remember Nick Mangold, his influence on football and the lives he touched will not be forgotten. The sports world mourns a great player and an even greater man.
