Real Madrid suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to Liverpool at Anfield on Tuesday, despite an inspired performance from goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois. The result marked Madrid's first Champions League loss of the season.

Courtois’ standout moment came in the 27th minute when he denied Dominik Szoboszlai in a tense one-on-one. Reflecting on the save, Courtois admitted it wasn’t textbook. “It wasn’t exactly a save from the goalkeeper’s manual,” he told Movistar. “I had to occupy space. Szoboszlai was on his own. Staying on the goal line would have been almost like facing a penalty. I threw myself at it with everything and made myself big. Luckily, it worked.”

The Belgian stopper ended the night with eight crucial saves, keeping Madrid in contention despite limited attacking threat.

Real Madrid Struggles in the Final Third

Real Madrid struggled to impose themselves at Anfield, managing just 0.45 expected goals compared to Liverpool’s 2.58. Courtois highlighted the team’s issues in attack. “We lacked a bit in the final third and lost too many duels,” he said. “We didn’t have enough possession in the other half. That’s where we need to play, especially away from home against strong teams. We could have performed better. These games are decided by small details, and that’s what happened.”

Despite the setback, Courtois remained optimistic. “We must stay calm. If we win at Olympiacos, we’re still in a good position to reach the top eight.”

Xabi Alonso Reflects on the Loss

Madrid coach Xabi Alonso offered his perspective after the defeat. “There are different ways of losing. Today’s game is very different from the 5-2 loss at the Metropolitano against Atletico,” he said. “We gave everything, competed well, and showed the right attitude. We lacked certain things that need improvement, but intensity wasn’t one of them.”

Alonso defended his squad against criticism. “I don’t have the feeling that intensity was missing. Thibaut kept us in the game. The goal gave Liverpool the advantage, but I can’t fault the team. Yes, the loss leaves a bad taste, but we have to keep moving forward.”

Bellingham Cautions Against Overreaction

Midfielder Jude Bellingham echoed the coach’s sentiment, stressing the importance of perspective. “Liverpool slightly edged it,” he admitted. “They brought more in the second half and are very dangerous from set pieces. It’s still early in the season. Last year, we were worse off in the Champions League and still progressed. We can’t let one defeat derail our season.”

Bellingham emphasized the need to focus on upcoming matches, including a crucial tie at Olympiacos. The team aims to recover quickly and maintain momentum in the group stage.

Real Madrid’s Recent Struggles in Europe

This defeat follows a mixed run for Madrid in European competitions. After winning El Clásico against Barcelona last month, Madrid lost against Paris Saint-Germain, Atlético Madrid, and now Liverpool under Alonso’s leadership.

The team will look to regroup ahead of their next fixtures. With three wins from three opening matches, Madrid still holds strong potential in the Champions League group stage. However, improvement in possession and attacking efficiency is critical for success against top-tier opponents.

Looking Ahead

Madrid faces Olympiacos next, a match seen as crucial to secure a path to the knockout stages. Alonso and his squad will aim to iron out mistakes from Anfield and strengthen their performance in the final third.

With Courtois in goal and Bellingham leading the midfield, Real Madrid will hope to bounce back, but the Anfield loss serves as a reminder of the challenges that lie ahead in Europe this season.
