The United Kingdom will soon enforce a new digital travel requirement that affects all Canadian visitors. Starting February 25, 2026, travellers from 85 countries, including Canada, the United States, and France, must hold an Electronic Travel Authorisation before entering Britain. Officials announced the final date in a public statement on Monday.

The ETA system first became available to Canadians early this year. The U.K. did not enforce it right away and allowed a transition period so travellers could adjust. That period now ends next winter.

Digital Permission Needed for Entry

British officials say the plan supports the country’s long-term shift toward a fully digital border. “This is a significant step towards digitising the immigration system and paves the way for a contactless U.K. border in the future,” the statement said.

They added that carriers will check travellers before departure. “Enforcing will mean that everyone who wants to come to the U.K. must have digital permission through either an ETA or an eVisa. Carriers will be checking people before they travel.”

The ETA applies to visitors who do not need a visa to enter Britain. It remains valid for two years once approved. Holders may enter the U.K. multiple times during those two years. They may stay for up to six months per trip.

Cost and Application Details

An ETA costs £16, or about $30 in Canadian dollars. Travellers may apply online or through the official mobile app. Processing time normally moves quickly, but officials still urge travellers to apply well before their departure date.

Canadians with British or Irish dual citizenship do not need an ETA. Still, authorities strongly urge dual citizens to keep their U.K. or Irish passports up to date. Outdated documents may lead to problems at check-in after February 25.

U.K. Says System Will Boost Security

U.K. Minister for Migration and Citizenship Mike Tapp says the ETA system will help protect the country. “ETAs give us greater power to stop those who pose a threat from setting foot in the country and gives us a fuller picture of immigration,” he said.

He also noted benefits for visitors. “ETAs are also better for travellers. Digitising the immigration system ensures the millions of people we welcome to the U.K. every year enjoy a more seamless travel experience.”

The U.K. expects the digital checks to improve border efficiency and reduce delays. Officials say the goal is to create a faster and more secure entry process for all visitors.

Canadians Urged to Prepare Early

Travel groups now encourage Canadians to review their documents and plan ahead. Many expect high demand early next year as the deadline approaches. The new requirement marks a major change for Canadian travellers, who have long entered the U.K. without extra digital steps.
