The theme for the 2026 Met Gala has been officially announced. Organizers revealed that the May 4 event will follow the dress code “Fashion is Art,” directly tied to the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s upcoming spring exhibition, “Costume Art.”
The exhibit will open just days after the gala, running from May 10, 2026, to Jan. 10, 2027. Both the exhibition and the gala will share the same theme, continuing the long-standing tradition of linking fashion’s biggest night with the museum’s Costume Institute showcase.
A Milestone for the Costume Institute
The 2026 exhibition marks an important moment for the museum. It will debut inside the newly created Condé M. Nast Galleries, a nearly 12,000-square-foot permanent space located beside the museum’s Great Hall. This new location signals a major step forward for fashion within the museum.

Curator Andrew Bolton described the opening as significant for both the department and the broader art world. “It will be transformative for our department, but I also think it’s going to be transformative to fashion more generally — the fact that an art museum like The Met is actually giving a central location to fashion,” he said.
Bolton explained that the exhibition will explore how clothing connects to art across centuries. He plans to display garments from different periods alongside paintings, sculptures and other objects that span 5,000 years of artistic history.
Fashion Across Every Gallery
Bolton emphasized that clothing plays a role in nearly every corner of the museum. “What connects every curatorial department and what connects every single gallery in the museum is fashion, or the dressed body. It’s the common thread throughout the whole museum,” he said.
He added, “Even the nude is never naked. It’s always inscribed with cultural values and ideas.”

The exhibit will focus on three main body themes: figures commonly shown in art, bodies often overlooked such as aging or pregnant forms, and universal body types including anatomical studies. Organizers hope the display will highlight how clothing shapes identity and reflects culture.
Star Power for 2026 Gala
The 2026 Met Gala will feature a high-profile group of co-chairs. Beyoncé, Nicole Kidman, Venus Williams and Anna Wintour will lead the evening.
Beyoncé will return to the gala for the first time in ten years. She last attended in 2016 and has appeared at the event seven times since making her debut in 2008. Kidman and Williams have both become regular attendees over the years and continue to play active roles in the celebration.
A Tradition of Themed Glamour
The Met Gala traces its roots to fundraising events held in the 1950s and 1960s. The modern format took shape after Diana Vreeland joined the organizing committee and introduced themed concepts. Since then, each gala has reflected the exhibition it supports.

In recent years, themes have explored a wide range of topics. The 2025 gala celebrated tailoring and Black style, drawing inspiration from fashion history and cultural identity.
The 2026 event promises to continue that tradition by placing fashion at the centre of artistic expression. With a theme that directly links clothing to art itself, organizers expect bold interpretations on the red carpet next spring.
