After nearly three decades, Practical Magic is returning to the big screen, with Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock reprising their roles as the Owens sisters. The first trailer for Practical Magic 2 has now been released, offering a glimpse into the long-awaited continuation of the story.
The trailer was initially unveiled at CinemaCon before being released publicly. The film is scheduled to arrive in theaters on September 11, marking a significant return for a story that has maintained a loyal following since its original release in 1998.
A Return to a Familiar Magical World
Directed by Susanne Bier, the sequel revisits the mystical world of the Owens family, blending themes of magic, family, and legacy. The narrative centers on a long-standing curse that continues to haunt the family, forcing the sisters to confront unresolved dangers tied to their lineage.
The story is described as a continuation filled with mystery and emotional stakes, while maintaining the whimsical tone that defined the original film.
The Owens Sisters Reunite
Kidman and Bullock return as Sally and Gilly Owens, bringing back the central dynamic that made the original film memorable. This time, the characters are at a different stage in life, reflecting the passage of time since audiences last saw them.
Sally is now raising adult daughters who are beginning to navigate their own lives, while Gilly appears to have settled into a quieter routine. However, the calm does not last long, as new challenges emerge that pull the sisters back into a larger conflict.

Expanded Cast Adds New Energy
The sequel introduces a new generation of characters alongside its returning leads. The cast includes Joey King, Lee Pace, Maisie Williams, Xolo Maridueña and Solly McLeod.
In addition, Stockard Channing and Dianne Wiest reprise their roles as the Owens sisters’ aunts, Frances and Jet, maintaining continuity with the original film.
Lee Pace’s character appears to play a key role in driving the plot forward, drawing the sisters away from their quiet New England setting into a more intense and uncertain situation.
Story Rooted in a Popular Book Series
The screenplay is written by Akiva Goldsman and Georgia Pritchett, and is based on The Book of Magic by Alice Hoffman. The novel is part of the broader Practical Magic book series, which has expanded the story beyond the original film.
This literary foundation provides a deeper narrative framework for the sequel, allowing it to explore the Owens family history in greater detail.

Production and Expectations
The film is produced by Bullock and Kidman alongside Denise Di Novi, with additional executive producers supporting the project.
With its blend of returning stars, new cast members, and an established fan base, the sequel is positioned as a major release for the fall season. The combination of nostalgia and fresh storytelling will likely play a key role in determining its reception.
While sequels arriving decades later often struggle to balance past and present, Practical Magic 2 appears to aim for continuity while introducing new elements that expand the story.
