Billy Bishop Airport plans runway extension into Lake Ontario to accommodate larger jets. The Canadian Press

Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport, located in downtown Toronto, is looking to expand its runway to better accommodate jets. The Toronto Port Authority (TPA) has proposed adding more than half a kilometre of land in Lake Ontario to lengthen the runway by more than two kilometres. This expansion is part of an ongoing effort to modernize the airport and make it more capable of handling larger, more powerful aircraft.

The Need for the Expansion

The airport has long faced limitations due to its shorter runway, which has made it difficult for larger jets to take off and land. By extending the runway, Billy Bishop will be able to accommodate a wider range of aircraft, particularly jets that require more runway space. The proposed expansion would help the airport better serve the growing demand for flights to and from Toronto, enhancing its competitive edge as a regional hub for air travel.

Plans for Lake Ontario Land

In order to achieve this extension, the TPA is considering building out over Lake Ontario. This land reclamation project would add a significant amount of space to the existing runway. The exact design of the extension is still being worked on, with various environmental and technical considerations being taken into account. The TPA aims to ensure that the expansion is done in a way that minimizes the environmental impact on the surrounding area.

Community Reaction and Future Projections

While the project is still in its early stages, it has generated significant attention within the local community. Supporters of the expansion argue that it will bring economic benefits to Toronto, including increased air traffic, job creation, and enhanced business opportunities. However, critics express concerns about the potential environmental impact of the expansion, particularly on the waterfront and local wildlife habitats.

The runway extension is expected to be a crucial part of the airport’s long-term growth strategy. Once completed, it would allow Billy Bishop to better compete with other major airports in the region, including Pearson International, by offering a more robust and versatile service for a wide range of airline customers.
