Elon Musk's X has announced its decision to cover the legal expenses of a Canadian physician who had previously faced criticism from regulators due to her tweets about COVID-19.

On Sunday morning, X News, formerly known as Twitter, stated that it is "proud to support" Dr. Kulvinder Kaur Gill against what it perceives as "government-backed attempts to silence her."

Last year, the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario issued a warning to Dr. Gill, a pediatric specialist based in Brampton, Ontario, regarding her social media posts, including one suggesting that COVID-19 vaccination was unnecessary.

Dr. Gill has initiated a crowdfunding campaign seeking $300,000 to cover her legal fees, which include expenses related to a court order associated with a lawsuit she filed against what she described as a "defamatory online campaign."

In response, X pledged to cover the remaining funds required for her crowdfunding campaign and assist her in appealing the cautions issued by the College in 2021.

Dr. Gill reached out to Musk via a social media post earlier this week, indicating that she owed approximately $300,000 in costs that were due within four days.

Publicly accessible court documents reveal that Dr. Gill previously filed a lawsuit against 23 defendants. The lawsuit was dismissed, resulting in the defendants being awarded over $1.1 million in costs.

Dr. Gill appealed the dismissal, specifically targeting four of the defendants, and sought permission to challenge the associated cost orders. However, her appeal was rejected, and her request for leave to appeal the cost orders was denied.

Last August, Musk announced on X that he would cover the legal expenses of individuals who had been "unfairly treated" by their employers due to their social media activity on the platform.

He stated that there would be "no limit" to his support.

It has been nearly eighteen months since Musk acquired Twitter for $44 billion, subsequently privatizing the company and renaming it X. He has since implemented significant changes, including abolishing its verification process and reducing its workforce, including engineers and moderators.

Experts have expressed concerns about the proliferation of misinformation on X, particularly regarding contentious issues such as the Israel-Hamas conflict.
