Air Canada has released its 2023 Annual Report, detailing the airline's accomplishments over the past year. Alongside robust financial performance, including record revenue, the carrier has made significant strides in key strategic areas.

Michael Rousseau, President and CEO of Air Canada, expressed satisfaction with the company's performance in 2023. He emphasized that the airline had met its financial targets while surpassing many strategic and operational goals. Rousseau highlighted Air Canada's commitment to consistent performance and its ability to deliver strong results.

Throughout the year, Air Canada focused on fleet renewal, introducing more fuel-efficient and passenger-friendly aircraft. The airline expanded its route network and product offerings to enhance customer choice and convenience. Additionally, Air Canada advanced its Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) initiatives, emphasizing sustainability, equity, and accessibility. The company also contributed to the communities it serves by creating numerous employment opportunities.

Rousseau underscored Air Canada's solid foundation and clear vision for the future as a leading global aviation provider, connecting Canada with the world. He expressed gratitude to customers for their loyalty, employees for their dedication to safety, and investors for their support.

Among Air Canada's achievements in 2023:

1. Passenger Volume and Financial Performance: Air Canada safely transported 46 million passengers and achieved full-year operating income of $2.3 billion on record operating revenue of $21.8 billion.

2. Financial Metrics: The airline's Adjusted EBITDA more than doubled, reaching nearly $4 billion. It generated approximately $4.3 billion in cash from operating activities and nearly $2.8 billion in free cash flow. Notably, Air Canada reduced its leverage ratio to 1.1 times Adjusted EBITDA and ended the year with total liquidity of $10.3 billion.

3. Route Expansion and Fleet Renewal: Air Canada launched 14 new routes, expanding its network to serve 188 direct destinations. The airline acquired 18 Boeing 787-10 Dreamliner and five Boeing 737 MAX-8 aircraft to support its fleet renewal and network growth.

4. Employment and Investments: In 2023, Air Canada hired 8,000 employees, increasing its total workforce to approximately 39,000. The company invested $1.6 billion in capital expenditures, including new aircraft, technology, and customer service enhancements.

5. Business Diversification: Air Canada's Aeroplan program reached eight million members, while Air Canada Cargo expanded its operations to over 12 destinations. Air Canada Vacations also saw significant revenue growth.

6. Customer Experience and Operational Improvements: The airline implemented 41 initiatives under its "Elevating the Customer Experience" service plan, improving key metrics such as on-time performance and baggage handling. Additionally, Air Canada accelerated its accessibility plan to better accommodate passengers with disabilities.

7. Climate Action Initiatives: Air Canada took steps to reduce its environmental impact through fleet modernization, sourcing sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), and engaging with corporate customers through its "Leave Less Travel" program.

8. Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Efforts: Air Canada established structural pillars for DEI, including an Executive Council, Steering Committee, Champions Program, and employee resource groups (ERGs).

9. Charitable Contributions: Through the Air Canada Foundation, the company supported 360 Canadian charitable organizations dedicated to children's health and well-being. The Foundation raised over $1.7 million, and the Dreams Take Flight program resumed, providing memorable experiences for over 1,000 children.

Air Canada's 2023 Annual Report reflects the company's commitment to financial excellence, operational efficiency, customer satisfaction, environmental responsibility, and social impact. Through its achievements and ongoing initiatives, Air Canada remains dedicated to serving its stakeholders and contributing positively to society.
