The Edmonton Oilers have made a crucial decision ahead of Game 6 against the Vancouver Canucks, opting to reinstate their top goaltender. Stuart Skinner will take back the goalie position after Calvin Pickard, the backup, started Games 4 and 5.

Facing elimination in the series, with the Canucks leading 3-2, this move carries significant weight. The victor of Game 6 will advance to the Western Conference Final to compete against the Dallas Stars.

The decision to switch goalies comes after a notable performance shift in Game 3. Coach Kris Knoblauch substituted Skinner with Pickard during the third period of that game. Skinner had conceded four goals on 15 shots up to that point, totaling 12 goals on 58 shots across the series, resulting in a save percentage of .793 and a goals-against average of 4.40.

Expressing his anticipation, Skinner stated earlier on Saturday, "I'm excited to get back in the net. I'm excited to get to do my job again."

In contrast, Pickard, typically a career backup and the Oilers' third-choice goalie, had a mixed performance in his first Stanley Cup Playoff start in Game 4. He made 19 saves, contributing to Edmonton's 3-2 victory. However, his performance waned in Game 5, where he allowed three goals on 35 shots, including the game-winner with just 32.6 seconds remaining in regulation time, resulting in a 3-2 loss for the Oilers.

Skinner showcased his effectiveness in the Oilers' previous five-game series victory over the Los Angeles Kings. In that series, he attained a record of 4-1, with a goals-against average of 2.59, a save percentage of .910, and even secured a shutout.

The decision to reinstate Skinner reflects the Oilers' determination to regain control of the series and extend their playoff run. With stakes high and the season on the line, every strategic move counts, especially in the critical goaltending position.

As the clock ticks down to Saturday's 8 p.m. ET faceoff at Rogers Place, both teams are preparing for a showdown that could define their postseason fate. For the Oilers, it's a chance to rally behind their top goaltender and mount a comeback. For the Canucks, it's an opportunity to maintain their momentum and secure their spot in the conference final.

Regardless of the outcome, Game 6 promises to be a tense and closely contested affair, with both teams leaving everything on the ice in pursuit of victory.
