Bimbo Canada, a subsidiary of Grupo Bimbo SAB de CV, has announced its decision to close its bakery in Levis, Que., during the first week of July. The production operations will be relocated to other baking facilities in the region, as stated by Bimbo. This plant is known for producing various types of bread, including white pan bread, whole wheat bread, and multigrain bread.

The closure of the bakery facility is primarily driven by Bimbo's efforts to enhance productivity in its operations by improving efficiency, optimizing capacity utilization, and reducing overall costs.

Marie-Ève Royer, the president of Bimbo Canada, emphasized the company's commitment to building a sustainable business to achieve its long-term goals. She highlighted the significant investments made by the company in Canada, amounting to over $500 million since 2014, with a substantial portion allocated to Quebec, totaling $160 million. Despite the company's efforts to sustain and grow its business, the declining utilization and production at the Levis bakery led to the difficult decision to close it down. Royer assured that the company would support affected employees and encourage them to seek opportunities at other Bimbo Canada facilities.

Approximately 95 employees will be impacted by the closure of the Levis bakery, according to Bimbo.

Based in Etobicoke, Ont., Bimbo Canada operates 16 baking plants, 11 distribution centers, and 183 depots across Canada.
