Ivan Fedotov has been banned from the Olympic Games and other international competitions for three years.

The International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) recently declared sanctions against Philadelphia Flyers goaltender Ivan Fedotov, his former club CSKA Moskva, and the Russian Ice Hockey Federation. These penalties stem from their involvement in disregarding Fedotov's valid contract with the Flyers from the previous season.

Fedotov, aged 27, inked a deal with the Flyers on May 7, 2022, but failed to join the team after signing his entry-level contract. Instead, he encountered legal troubles when arrested on July 1, 2022, for alleged evasion of military service. Following this, he was hospitalized due to stress-induced gastritis and subsequently enlisted in the Russian navy.

Having signed a two-year contract with CSKA last summer and played for them this season, Fedotov faces a six-month ban from club-level play should he depart the Flyers for any club under the IIHF’s jurisdiction.

CSKA has been prohibited from engaging in international transfers for two years, starting from August 11, 2024, until August 10, 2026. Additionally, the IIHF imposed a 1 million Swiss franc fine on the Russian Ice Hockey Federation for its involvement in the matter.

Furthermore, the IIHF has barred Fedotov from participating in any IIHF competitions for three years, including the Olympic Games, as emphasized in their press release.

The broader implications of these sanctions remain uncertain, especially considering Russia's current ban from various international competitions due to its actions against Ukraine.

Nevertheless, Fedotov now has the opportunity to kickstart his NHL career with the Flyers. He officially joined the team on March 28, immediately after his KHL contract with CSKA was terminated. Despite a few appearances for the Flyers towards the end of the season, Fedotov's performance was mixed. Notably, he demonstrated strength in relief against the Islanders but struggled in his first NHL start against the Buffalo Sabres.

However, there's a silver lining for both the Flyers and Fedotov as the saga nears its conclusion. Fedotov recently signed a two-year contract extension worth $6.55 million on April 23, providing stability and continuity moving forward.
