Meta Ends Facebook Messenger Desktop App Support

Facebook Messenger’s desktop app has officially reached the end of the road. As of December 15, 2025, the standalone app for Mac and Windows is no longer available. Users are now being redirected to Facebook’s website to continue their conversations.

For many, the shutdown feels inevitable rather than sudden. The desktop app launched during the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic, when demand for remote communication surged. But over time, it struggled to keep pace with faster-moving competitors.

Messenger’s desktop version lacked key features. It supported fewer video call participants than platforms like Zoom. Screen sharing remained absent. Sharing call links was never seamless. These gaps limited its appeal, especially for professional or group use.

A Slow Fade from Meta’s Priorities

Signs of Messenger’s decline had been visible for years. In 2023, Meta began folding Messenger back into the main Facebook app. That move signaled a strategic shift away from treating Messenger as a standalone product.

The desktop app’s technical evolution added to the problem. On Mac, Messenger was rebuilt using Apple’s Catalyst framework. The tool allows iPad apps to run on macOS. While efficient in theory, Catalyst has drawn criticism from developers and users alike.

Developers pointed to added complexity and maintenance work. Users noticed apps felt less polished and less native. Before Catalyst, Messenger on Mac went through multiple rebuilds. It began as an Electron app, then moved to React Native Desktop, and later shifted again.

Windows users saw a similar downgrade. Last year, the Messenger app transitioned into a progressive web app. That change further blurred the line between a native experience and browser-based access.

Strategy Behind the Shutdown

The gradual stripping back of features likely reduced demand for a dedicated desktop app. At the same time, Meta appeared focused on driving users back to Facebook itself. Messenger’s reintegration may help boost engagement on the aging social platform.

In October, Meta confirmed what many expected. The company announced the desktop app would be retired by year’s end. Users were advised to set up a PIN to preserve chat history before moving to the web version.

The shutdown applies to both Mac and Windows users. Those who use Messenger without a Facebook account are not being locked out. Instead, they are redirected to Messenger.com, where login remains possible without creating a Facebook profile.

What Users Need to Know

Messenger continues to function through web browsers. Conversations, contacts, and features remain accessible online. Meta has published detailed guidance in its Help Center. Separate instructions are available for Mac and Windows users to ease the transition.

The end of Messenger’s desktop app marks another step in Meta’s evolving product strategy. Convenience now lives in the browser. Dedicated desktop software, once seen as essential, is no longer part of the plan.
