At Carlsbad Caverns National Park in New Mexico, visitors are allowed to consume only plain water inside the massive cavern. Recently, a visitor dropped a bag of Cheetos in the cave, causing significant disruption to the delicate cave ecosystem. Park rangers highlighted this issue in a Facebook post, explaining that such seemingly minor incidents can have far-reaching consequences for the cave’s environment.
The post described how the spilled Cheetos had a considerable impact on the cave’s ecosystem. The processed corn in the snacks, once softened by the cave’s humidity, created an ideal environment for various forms of microbial life and fungi to thrive. This led to the emergence of a temporary food web involving cave crickets, mites, spiders, and flies, which in turn spread the nutrients throughout the cave. The presence of moulds on nearby surfaces led to unpleasant odours and further complications within the cave’s natural system.

Rangers spent around 20 minutes meticulously cleaning up the moulds and foreign debris from the cave surfaces. They noted that while some of the life forms resulting from the snacks were native to the cave, many were not, highlighting the broader impact of the litter.

The park’s message emphasized that while the environmental damage caused by a small snack might seem trivial from a human perspective, it can be "world-changing" for the cave’s ecosystem. They contrasted this situation with the unavoidable small traces left by visitors on established trails, urging all park-goers to minimize their impact and leave natural areas better than they found them.

The park’s guidelines stress that consuming anything other than plain water can attract wildlife into the cave, which can further disrupt the ecosystem. The Big Room at Carlsbad Caverns, known for being the largest single cave chamber by volume in North America, is a marvel of natural history. Formed millions of years ago through the dissolution of limestone by sulfuric acid, it is accessible via a 1.25-mile (2 km) flat trail.

The incident at Carlsbad Caverns serves as a reminder of the delicate balance within natural environments and the importance of adhering to park guidelines to preserve these precious ecosystems.
