National Pizza Week runs from Sunday, Jan. 11, to Saturday, Jan. 17, giving people across the country a tasty reason to enjoy a slice. While no clear record explains how the week began, pizza itself carries a long and colourful past. It grew from simple flatbreads in the Mediterranean and took its modern form in 18th-century Naples before immigrants introduced it to North America in the early 1900s.

Pizza’s Place on the Table

Pizza remains a favourite meal, though its spot among top food choices has shifted over time. Spending trends show diners now spread their money across more options, including sandwiches, coffee shops, chicken meals, and Mexican food. Even so, pizza continues to draw steady demand.

Total spending at large pizza chains reached about $30.9 billion in 2025. That figure trails far behind burger chains, which passed $110 billion the same year. Rising food costs and cautious household budgets have played a role in changing how people order pizza.

“Pizza chain sales have remained essentially flat the last two years and have trailed well behind the rate of restaurant price inflation, which has risen by around +4% during that timeframe,” Kevin Schimpf said.

How Customers Are Ordering Differently

As prices rise, customers have started choosing smaller pizzas and fewer toppings. The average pizza now costs about $17, up more than 20 per cent over five years. These shifts show how families try to enjoy eating out while watching their spending.

Lower grocery prices for items like milk, butter, and cheese have helped at-home cooking, but pizza nights still hold strong appeal, especially when deals come into play.

Big Chains Roll Out Specials

Many pizza brands have stepped in with offers for National Pizza Week. Pizza Hut continues to sell its 16-inch Big New Yorker pizza for $10. The chain also launched a playful promotion tied to football broadcasts, adding extra buzz to the deal.

Domino’s joined with several offers, including a mix-and-match deal at $6.99 per item and a $19.99 combo with pizzas and bread bites. The company also introduced a weeklong carryout deal for pizzas or wings at $7.99 each.

Convenience Stores and Specialty Pizzas

Casey’s convenience stores cut 25 per cent off whole pizzas during the week with a special code. The chain also introduced the Barn Burner Chicken Pizza, created by one of its managers. The pizza features grilled chicken, bacon, two cheeses, red onion, jalapeños, and bold sauces. Select markets carry the item for a limited time.

More Offers Worth Checking

California Pizza Kitchen offers $5 select pizzas to loyalty members throughout the week, with options for dine-in, takeout, and direct delivery. Wiseguy Pizza runs a buy-one, get-one half-off deal on large online orders. Other chains, including Happy Joe’s, Hungry Howie’s, and Papa Murphy’s, also share discounts and special crust options.

Local pizzerias may offer their own deals as well. For many customers, National Pizza Week brings both comfort food and welcome savings.
