Samsung patents reveal a unique square-shaped smartphone with a sliding, extendable display, showcasing potential advancements in device design. (Samsung Display)

January 30, 2024

Samsung is reportedly exploring the development of a unique square-shaped smartphone featuring an extendable display, according to a recently discovered online patent. The patent reveals a compact square device equipped with an extendable display that emerges from either end through a sliding motion. This revelation follows closely after the appearance of two Samsung technologies, Flex Magic and Flex Magic Pixel, in the European Union Intellectual Property Office's trademark registration portal about a month ago. Both were described as "expandable screens for smartphones," hinting at a potential common thread with the newly uncovered US patent.

The patent, first brought to light by Website Rating in collaboration with tipster David Kowalski from xleaks7, is documented in a PDF specifying the United States Patent Application Publication and identifies Samsung Display as the applicant. The filing date for this patent is June 22, 2023. Notably, the patent details Samsung's pursuit of a novel display technology that can extend from multiple directions.

The key innovation highlighted in the patent revolves around preventing the spring-back action of a metal layer at the end of a sliding display. This innovation addresses concerns related to panel cracking due to repeated contact between the metal layer and the display panel, enhancing the device's durability. Additionally, the patent indicates compatibility with both OLED and LCD displays.

Although the patent itself does not explicitly mention a square-shaped smartphone, the accompanying report suggests such a design. However, the language used in the patent is ambiguous, leaving room for the technology to be applied to various devices, including smart TVs, AR devices, smartwatches, or potentially an entirely new gadget. As of now, there is no official confirmation regarding Samsung's development of a square-shaped smartphone with an extendable display, and details remain shrouded in secrecy.

A prior report by GizmoChina on the Flex Magic Pixel patent draws parallels with the newly uncovered patent. While similarities exist, there are notable differences. The Samsung Flex Magic patent specifically refers to an "expandable screen for smartphones" and "smartphones in the shape of a watch," whereas the recent patent avoids such specific language.

In conclusion, Samsung's exploration of a square-shaped smartphone with an extendable display is based on a recently uncovered US patent. Despite the absence of official confirmation, the patent hints at a novel display technology that could extend in multiple directions, offering potential applications beyond smartphones. The prevention of spring-back action in the metal layer adds a layer of durability to the device, but specific details, including the device's form factor and intended use, remain undisclosed.
