Starbucks is rolling out new compostable cold cups at select locations in response to local regulations aimed at reducing waste and pollution. Starting soon, customers at 24 stores across California and Minnesota will find their favorite Starbucks beverages served in these eco-friendly fiber-based cups.
Beth Nervig, senior manager of social impact communications at Starbucks, explained that the move comes as cities and states implement laws like the Alameda Disposable Food Service Ware Reduction Law, which promotes reusable and compostable options for to-go items. These fiber-based cups align with Starbucks' commitment to innovation in both single-use and reusable packaging.

The new compostable cups are specifically designed for cold drinks, featuring a double-walled fiber-based paper board with a bioplastic liner. Even the lids are compostable, made from molded fiber. Despite this eco-friendly shift for cold drinks, customers who prefer hot beverages will continue to receive their drinks in standard paper cups.

Starbucks, known for its iconic siren logo, has ensured that these new cups maintain their branding while using sustainable materials. The cups and lids are opaque and crafted from environmentally friendly resources, reflecting Starbucks' dedication to sustainability.

In addition to introducing these compostable cups, Starbucks encourages customers to bring their own reusable cups, offering discounts and rewards as incentives. This initiative supports Starbucks' broader environmental efforts, including ongoing tests of a returnable cup program in select cities.

As Starbucks adapts to local regulations and consumer demand for sustainable practices, the introduction of these compostable cups marks a significant step towards reducing environmental impact while maintaining quality and convenience for customers.
