Nestled in the heart of Leslieville, Samaira’s Kitchen, located at 1056 Queen St. E, stands as a family-owned establishment, dishing out a menu comprising homestyle pizzas, burgers, and Italian fare.

In a recent interview with Now Toronto, Rajesh Chamoli, the proprietor and chef of the restaurant, shed light on the pay-it-forward initiative that he initiated and the motivations behind its inception. Chamoli explained, "My friend and I, we were just sitting and having a conversation, observing the struggles everyone is facing. We thought, let’s do something small to give back to the community."

Since its initiation, the restaurant has provided 465 complimentary meals as of the latest count on Wednesday. Initially comprising burgers and fries, the free meals have evolved to include breakfast sandwiches and currently feature panzerottis. Each day, a minimum of 30 complimentary meals are prepared, and this information is conveyed to residents through meal tickets prominently displayed on the restaurant's windows.

Chamoli expressed that, as a small business owner, he felt a sense of responsibility and believed in the capacity of his establishment to make a positive impact, even if it amounted to a modest contribution. The chef emphasized that in the face of rising food insecurity, exacerbated by factors such as food inflation and multiple job engagements, his role extended beyond culinary pursuits to fulfilling a societal obligation.

Earlier this month, the "Who’s Hungry" report from the Daily Bread Food Bank and North York Harvest Food Bank highlighted the escalating food insecurity in the city, with one in 10 Torontonians now relying on food banks, doubling the figures from the previous year.

Chamoli underscored the profound connection between food and emotions, expressing his belief in the transformative power of food to evoke joy, smiles, and even tears. He shared anecdotes of numerous community members, including those from nearby housing and the South Riverdale neighborhood, expressing gratitude for the initiative.

In Chamoli's view, this initiative aligns with the essence of Canadian values, emphasizing the generosity ingrained in the community. He narrated instances of people holding his hand, expressing blessings and gratitude, reinforcing his belief in the positive impact of giving.

As for the future, Chamoli affirmed that there are no plans to halt the initiative anytime soon, expressing the intent to continue as long as it remains feasible. Individuals interested in supporting the cause can contribute by pre-purchasing meals either through the restaurant's website or in person at the establishment.
