The release date for Frozen 3 has been announced, just days after Jennifer Lee, the chief creative officer of Walt Disney Animation Studios, shared new concept art from the upcoming film at the D23 Expo. Lee also confirmed that the film will hit theaters in 2027.
In addition, Lee revealed that a fourth installment in the Frozen series is in development.
The Frozen franchise has been a significant success for Disney and a popular choice during the Thanksgiving season. The first film, released in 2013 and starring Kristen Bell and Idina Menzel, grossed $1.28 billion. Its sequel, Frozen II (2019), earned $1.45 billion.
The release of Frozen 3 was initially scheduled for 2026, but it has been postponed due to pandemic-related delays and industry strikes. Lee, who co-wrote and co-directed the first two films with Chris Buck, is also involved in this new installment.
The Frozen movies follow the story of two royal sisters from Arendelle who lose their parents, the king and queen. Elsa, voiced by Menzel, becomes queen but struggles with her powerful icy abilities. Bell voices Anna, her devoted younger sister.
The concept art presented at D23 depicted Elsa riding a horse, while Anna was shown on another horse accompanied by Olaf, the beloved snowman voiced by Josh Gad.
In addition to Frozen 3, Disney announced that Pixar's Hoppers will be released on March 6, 2026. This film, revealed at D23, features Jon Hamm and Bobby Moynihan as the voices of a beaver and a human who switch bodies.
Disney also confirmed the new title for James Cameron's forthcoming 20th Century film: Avatar: Fire and Ash, set to premiere on December 19, 2025.
