General Motors is recalling over 449,000 SUVs and pickup trucks due to a software issue in the electronic brake control module. This defect may prevent the warning light from activating when there is a loss of brake fluid.

The recall affects 38,382 vehicles in Canada.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced on Friday that the recall includes specific models from 2023 and 2024, such as the Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV, Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Chevrolet Tahoe, Suburban 1500, GMC Sierra 1500, and GMC Yukon and Yukon XL.

Without the warning light, drivers might unknowingly operate their vehicles with low brake fluid, potentially leading to reduced braking ability and a higher risk of accidents.

To address the issue, General Motors will provide a free software update for the electronic brake control module. Owners can either wait for the update or schedule an appointment at a GM dealership to have it installed, according to Transport Canada.

To see if your vehicle is part of the recall, visit the General Motors website and enter your vehicle identification number. Affected owners will also receive notification letters, expected to be mailed by October 28. For more information, vehicle owners can contact GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782, Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, or Cadillac customer service at 1-800-458-8006.
