Nico Williams, an artist from the Aamjiwnaang First Nation, has won Canada’s top prize for contemporary visual art, the Sobey Art Award. The prestigious award, which honors Canadian artists whose work speaks to both national and global issues, comes with a $100,000 prize.

Williams is recognized for his innovative use of sculptural beadwork, transforming everyday objects into pieces that weave personal stories into universal themes. His work highlights the intimate connection between individual experiences and broader cultural narratives.

Other artists nominated for the award include Taqralik Partridge, Judy Chartrand, Rhayne Vermette, June Clark, and Mathieu Léger, each of whom will receive a $25,000 prize.

This year, the jury that selected the finalists was made up of six Canadian artists, all of whom are former Sobey Art Award finalists or winners, marking the first time such a panel has been assembled.

The works of the shortlisted artists are on display at the National Gallery of Canada, where they will be available for viewing until April 6, 2025.
