A memorial service for Broadway star Gavin Creel, previously announced for New York, will now be available to watch live online for audiences in both the U.S. and the U.K.

Creel, a Tony Award-winning actor renowned for his performances in Thoroughly Modern Millie, Hair, and the recent revival of Into the Woods, passed away in September at the age of 48. He had been diagnosed with metastatic melanotic peripheral nerve sheath sarcoma, a rare and aggressive cancer, in July.

A tribute event will be held on December 2 at the St. James Theatre in New York City, starting at 4:00 p.m. ET. The service is open to the public, with space for 1,500 guests.

MCC Theater, which is currently presenting Creel's original musical Walk On Through: Confessions of a Museum Novice at the Susan & Ronald Frankel Theater, will host the live stream on their YouTube channel for U.S. viewers. In the U.K., the Society of London Theatre will provide streaming access on their own YouTube platform.

The service will not be available for on-demand viewing after it concludes.

As a further tribute, Broadway theaters will dim their lights on December 3 at 6:45 p.m. ET, the day after Creel’s memorial, in his honor. MCC Theater will also participate in this tribute. The decision to dim the lights was made after initial plans for a partial dimming by the Broadway League faced criticism from figures like Rachel Zegler, Lin-Manuel Miranda, and Audra McDonald.

Those wishing to make donations in memory of Creel are encouraged to contribute to Broadway Cares/Equity Fights Aids. Anyone interested in attending the memorial at the St. James Theatre is asked to send their name and contact details to [email protected].
