After nearly 29 years, Adam Sandler is stepping back into his iconic role as Happy Gilmore in the upcoming Netflix sequel, Happy Gilmore 2, set to hit screens in 2025. The first teaser for the highly anticipated film was released early on Christmas, coinciding with Netflix’s historic live broadcast of two NFL games.
The teaser quickly captured attention, bringing back the classic chaos of Happy Gilmore’s wild golfing antics. Sandler’s character, a rough-around-the-edges former hockey player turned professional golfer, is once again ready to take on the golfing world, this time with some familiar faces and exciting new additions to the cast.
Julie Bowen reprises her role as Virginia Venit, the love interest from the first film. Christopher McDonald also returns as Happy’s long-time rival, Shooter McGavin. Fans of the original movie are sure to remember the tension between the two characters, and it looks like their rivalry will continue in the sequel.
In addition to the returning stars, Happy Gilmore 2 introduces an impressive new cast. Music sensation Bad Bunny makes his debut in the movie, along with The Substance actress Margaret Qualley. Comedian Nick Swardson, a frequent Sandler collaborator, joins the cast, as well as NFL superstar Travis Kelce, rapper Kid Cudi (Scott Mescudi), and Benny Safdie, known for his work with Sandler on Uncut Gems. The addition of these new faces adds a fresh dynamic to the film, promising fans a mix of humor, celebrity cameos, and unexpected surprises.
Happy Gilmore 2 is being directed by Kyle Newacheck, known for his work on Netflix’s Murder Mystery. Tim Herlihy, who co-wrote the original film, returns to pen the script for the sequel. Dennis Dugan, who directed the first movie, will serve as an executive producer, with Jack Giarraputo and Robert Simonds producing the film.
The first Happy Gilmore film, released in 1996, quickly became a cult classic. It followed Happy, a fiery-tempered hockey player who enters the world of professional golf to win money to pay off his grandmother’s back taxes. In the process, he finds himself battling through wild tournaments, confrontations with golf’s elite, and even a memorable fistfight with the host of The Price Is Right, Bob Barker.
Happy Gilmore remains one of Sandler’s most beloved roles, and it’s clear that the sequel has been eagerly awaited by fans of the original. With a new, diverse cast, classic characters, and plenty of comedic potential, Happy Gilmore 2 looks to be a hilarious continuation of Happy’s adventures.
In the teaser, we see Happy back on the green, bringing his unique style of golfing back to life. Whether he’s clashing with Shooter McGavin or facing off against new rivals, it’s clear that Happy’s unpredictable and entertaining journey isn’t over yet.
