Leslie Charleson, the celebrated actress known for her iconic portrayal of Monica Quartermaine on General Hospital, passed away peacefully on Sunday morning after battling a prolonged illness. She was 79 years old.

“It is with profound sadness that I share the passing of my dear friend and colleague, Leslie Charleson,” announced Frank Valentini, executive producer of General Hospital. “Leslie’s legacy spans nearly five decades on the show, and just as Monica was the heart of the Quartermaine family, Leslie was the matriarch of our cast and crew. I’ll deeply miss our daily conversations, her quick wit, and her commanding presence on set. On behalf of everyone at General Hospital, I extend heartfelt condolences to her loved ones during this difficult time.”

Charleson first joined General Hospital in 1977, stepping into the role of Monica Quartermaine and quickly becoming a fan favorite. Her tenure on the ABC soap opera solidified her place as a daytime television legend. Despite facing health challenges in recent years—including mobility issues from several falls that required the use of a walker—Charleson’s indomitable spirit never waned. Her final appearance on the show was in December 2023, and she was hospitalized last week following another fall.

Born in Kansas City, Missouri, Charleson began her acting career at just 19, starring in the ABC daytime drama A Flame in the Wind in 1964. She went on to appear in CBS's Love Is a Many Splendored Thing, where her character was embroiled in a memorable love triangle. Throughout the 1970s, Charleson made guest appearances on numerous hit primetime shows, including The Rockford Files, Happy Days, and Marcus Welby, M.D.. She also starred in the 1973 film The Day of the Dolphin alongside Shelley Winters, sparking a lifelong fascination with dolphins.

Though her primetime success was significant, Charleson found her home in daytime television. When she joined General Hospital, she replaced Patsy Rahn as Monica Bard—a transition she later recalled wasn’t initially welcomed by some cast and crew members. However, her humor and warmth quickly won everyone over.

During her 40-plus years on the show, Charleson’s portrayal of Monica Quartermaine brought both drama and levity. From intense storylines involving love triangles, breast cancer survival, and family tragedies to moments of humor as a feisty member of the dysfunctional Quartermaine clan, Charleson captivated audiences. Her work earned her four Daytime Emmy nominations for Outstanding Lead Actress.

In 2010, Charleson transitioned to a recurring role on the show, a decision met with protests from her devoted fans. Despite occasional recasts due to injuries, Monica Quartermaine remained a beloved character, frequently referenced in storylines involving the Quartermaine family.

Beyond her professional accomplishments, Charleson was cherished for her kind-heartedness, loyalty, and zest for life. A close friend reminisced about joyful moments spent at her home, her love for Elvis Presley and The Eagles, and her laughter that seemed to rise from her very soul. Charleson’s passions extended to her horse, her fans, and her enduring love for General Hospital.

Leslie Charleson leaves behind a legacy of talent, resilience, and heartfelt connections, both on and off screen. She will be profoundly missed by her fans, friends, and the entire General Hospital family.
