Dakar, Senegal – Khaby Lame, the world’s most-followed TikTok sensation known for his silent yet expressive videos, is now using his global influence for a powerful cause. The 24-year-old social media star, who has captivated over 162 million followers without uttering a word, has been named UNICEF’s newest goodwill ambassador.

On Friday, Lame addressed young people in his home country of Senegal, embracing his new role with a heartfelt commitment to making a difference. The influencer, whose meteoric rise began after he lost his factory job during the pandemic, expressed his excitement about the opportunity to see the world’s challenges up close and contribute to meaningful solutions.

A Personal Connection to UNICEF’s Mission

Reflecting on his own journey, Lame shared how childhood struggles shaped his perspective. “It’s a true honor to join UNICEF as a goodwill ambassador, standing with an organization that fights for children’s rights every day,” he said in a statement. “Growing up, I feared poverty, struggled to find my passion in school, and faced setbacks, including losing my job during the pandemic. But I discovered my calling, and now, I want to show kids everywhere that they, too, can find their place in the world—if given the right opportunities.”

His story resonates deeply with Senegalese youth, many of whom face economic hardship and limited prospects. With over 60% of the country’s population under 25 and the vast majority working in informal jobs, many young people feel forced to risk dangerous journeys across the Atlantic in search of better futures.

Inspiring a Generation to Dream Big

Addressing his fellow Senegalese, Lame delivered a powerful message: “Dream big. Work hard to accomplish your dreams, even if people say you can’t.” His words carry weight, as his own life stands as proof that perseverance can turn setbacks into success.

Although Lame has spent most of his life in Italy, having moved there as a baby with his working-class parents, he only received Italian citizenship at the age of 20. However, his Senegalese roots remain strong. “I’ve lived in Italy for 20 years, but my blood is Senegalese,” he told The Associated Press during his visit to Dakar, dressed elegantly in a beige suit and matching tie. “I feel both Senegalese and Italian.”

Making a Real Impact

Lame’s UNICEF ambassadorship was announced at the conclusion of his four-day trip to Senegal, where he met with young changemakers dedicated to transforming their communities. His visit was filled with moments of inspiration, as he listened to stories of resilience and hope from the country’s youth.

While his TikTok fame may have been built on silent reactions, Khaby Lame is now speaking up—loud and clear—for children and their future.
