Shocking Discovery by Maintenance Worker

Legendary actor Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, were found dead in their Santa Fe, New Mexico home. Their bodies, along with one of their dogs, were discovered by a maintenance worker on Wednesday. Authorities believe they had been deceased for some time before being found.

Denise Avila, a spokesperson for the sheriff’s office, confirmed there were no visible signs of injury or foul play. However, detectives considered the circumstances suspicious, warranting a thorough investigation.

Unanswered Questions Surrounding Their Deaths

Hackman, 95, was found in the entryway of the house, while Arakawa, 65, was lying on her right side in the bathroom. A space heater was positioned next to her head, possibly indicating she collapsed suddenly.

To rule out potential hazards, the New Mexico Gas Co. inspected the home’s gas lines but found no leaks. The fire department also detected no signs of carbon monoxide poisoning. Investigators remain cautious, noting that gas exposure can leave minimal physical evidence.

How the Bodies Were Found

A maintenance worker arrived for routine work and noticed the front door was ajar. Upon looking through a window, he saw Arakawa lying on the floor and immediately called 911.

"I can’t get inside," he told the operator. "The door is locked, but I can see her on the floor."

The worker, along with another staff member, mentioned that they rarely saw the couple and last interacted with them about two weeks ago.

Hackman was found with a cane nearby, suggesting he may have fallen. In a bathroom closet near Arakawa, authorities also discovered a deceased German shepherd inside a kennel. However, two other dogs—one inside the home and another outside—were found alive.

No Signs of Struggle or Theft

During a press conference, Sheriff Adan Mendoza stated that there were no signs of forced entry, struggle, or theft. Investigators have not yet determined a cause of death, pending autopsy, toxicology, and carbon monoxide test results.

While some officials suspect gas poisoning, Loyola Marymount University law professor Laurie Levenson pointed out that authorities are keeping all possibilities open. "They don’t have clear evidence of homicide, but they’re being thorough," she explained.

A Hollywood Legend Remembered

Gene Hackman, known for his versatility, left an indelible mark on the film industry. His roles ranged from the villainous Lex Luthor in Superman to the inspiring coach in Hoosiers.

A two-time Oscar winner, Hackman won Best Actor for The French Connection (1972) and Best Supporting Actor for Unforgiven (1992). His unexpected passing comes just days before the 2025 Academy Awards.

Tributes poured in from Hollywood, including longtime friend Clint Eastwood. "There was no finer actor than Gene," Eastwood said. "He was intense, instinctive, and never hit a false note. I will miss him dearly."

Life in Santa Fe

Hackman and Arakawa, a classically trained pianist, met in the 1980s and later settled in Santa Fe. Their sprawling home, valued at over $4 million, was nestled in a gated community with breathtaking views of the Rocky Mountains.

Though he retired from acting in the early 2000s, Hackman remained an active writer, co-authoring novels and serving on the board of the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum. Over the years, he was occasionally spotted around Santa Fe but largely stayed out of the Hollywood spotlight.

A Lasting Legacy

Despite stepping away from the film industry, Hackman’s influence remained strong. His family expressed their grief in a heartfelt statement:

“He was admired by millions for his talent, but to us, he was simply Dad and Grandpa. We are devastated by his loss.”

As the investigation into his and Arakawa’s deaths continues, the world remembers Gene Hackman not just as a Hollywood legend but as a man whose talent and presence shaped cinema for decades.
