Paul Bronfman, a key figure in Canada’s film and television industry, passed away on Wednesday in Toronto at the age of 67. His children, Jonathan, Andrew, and Alex Bronfman, shared the news, remembering him as a resilient and dedicated leader.

Bronfman played a pivotal role in shaping Canada’s screen industry, providing essential production services, mentoring new talent, and strengthening the country’s entertainment sector.

A Pillar of the Canadian Film Industry

As chairman and CEO of Comweb Corporation and William F. White International, Bronfman supplied equipment, studio space, and production services to Canadian and Hollywood productions. He was also a founding partner of Filmport Studios, later rebranded as Pinewood Toronto Studios, where he served as chair.

Film producer Don Carmody, a close friend of Bronfman for 45 years, described him as a “titan of the Canadian industry.” Carmody highlighted Bronfman’s tireless contributions, serving on multiple industry boards and advisory committees, always giving back to the community.

A Passion for Music and Resilience in Adversity

Despite being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1995, Bronfman remained active in his passions. Carmody shared that they continued attending rock concerts together, even as Bronfman’s mobility declined. "He couldn't get up and dance, but he could bob his head to the music better than anyone," he recalled.

A Legacy of Business and Philanthropy

Coming from one of Canada’s most well-known business families, Bronfman’s entrepreneurial spirit extended far beyond film. Bronfman was the great-nephew of Seagram Company founder Samuel Bronfman. His father, Edward Bronfman, built a vast business empire that included Royal LePage, Labatt Breweries, and the Montreal Canadiens.

Beyond business, Bronfman was a philanthropist and an advocate for the arts. He supported numerous film festivals and charities and held leadership roles in industry organizations such as the Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television, the Canadian Film Centre, and the Canadian Media Production Association.

Tributes from Industry Leaders

Film producer Don Carmody, a close friend of Bronfman for 45 years, called him a "titan of the Canadian industry." He recalled their shared involvement in numerous boards and committees, emphasizing Bronfman’s tireless dedication to the film and television community.

"Somehow, he always managed to be on one more board or advisory committee than me," Carmody remarked. "He was tireless in donating his time and money to this community and will be greatly missed."

Neishaw Ali, CEO of Spin VFX, echoed these sentiments, calling Bronfman a "great mentor, visionary leader, and philanthropist." She highlighted his role in shaping Canada's production landscape, championing new talent, and fostering creativity in the industry.

Remembering Paul Bronfman

Bronfman leaves behind his three children, six grandchildren, and two brothers, David and Brian. A funeral service will be held at Beth Tzedec Congregation on Sunday, where friends, family, and industry colleagues will gather to honor his remarkable life and legacy.
