The legendary Stan Lee, the creative force behind Marvel’s most beloved superheroes, left behind an unforgettable legacy. However, his final years were marked by betrayal, manipulation, and mistreatment by those closest to him. A new documentary, Stan Lee: The Final Chapter, sheds light on the dark reality of his last days.
Directed by Jon Bolerjack, the film exposes the financial and emotional abuse Lee had to bear, especially during his public appearances. The documentary’s creators have launched a Kickstarter campaign to secure funding and bring this story to audiences worldwide.
A Documentary Rooted in First-Hand Experience
Jon Bolerjack, a lifelong comic book enthusiast and filmmaker, first met Lee a decade ago while pitching a reality show idea. This meeting led to Bolerjack becoming part of Lee’s entourage, giving him rare access to the Marvel icon’s life.
Through hundreds of hours of footage, Bolerjack witnessed firsthand how Lee was pushed to exhaustion. Despite his deteriorating health, he was subjected to grueling schedules, attending conventions, and signing memorabilia for hours. The film explores how Lee’s fame was exploited for financial gain, with vast sums of money earned from autographs and photo ops—much of which never reached Lee or his family.
Exploitation and Legal Battles
In the months leading up to his death, Lee took legal action against his former business partner, Keya Morgan. He accused Morgan of manipulation and elder abuse, even filing a restraining order against him. Morgan was later arrested for deceiving Lee into believing he was in danger, further isolating him from those who genuinely cared.
The documentary revisits these troubling events, highlighting the emotional and physical toll they took on Lee. It serves as a stark reminder of how even the most revered public figures can fall victim to exploitation when they are most vulnerable.

A Call for Respect and Protection
Bolerjack, who had grown close to Lee over the years, aimed to advocate for his well-being. He tried to reduce Lee’s workload and fought for his right to rest. Despite the hardships, Lee remained positive, never expressing shame over what had happened to him. In fact, he understood the importance of sharing his story.
“I spoke to him about this at length, even toward the very end of his life,” Bolerjack revealed. “He wanted people to know what happened—not as a moment of weakness, but as a warning.”
Preserving Stan Lee’s True Legacy
While Lee’s creative genius shaped the world of comics, his final chapter was one of struggle and betrayal. Stan Lee: The Final Chapter aims to ensure that his story is told honestly, not just as a celebration of his work, but as a cautionary tale.
The film also raises an important question—how can society better protect aging icons from exploitation? With support from the Kickstarter campaign, Bolerjack hopes to complete the documentary and release it by the end of the year.
Stan Lee’s legacy will always live on through the heroes he created, but his real-life story is a reminder that even legends deserve dignity, respect, and protection in their final years.
