A snowfall alert was announced Wednesday morning for Edmonton and nearby areas. Global News

Residents of central and northern Alberta, including Edmonton, should prepare for a heavy snowfall as winter makes a late return. Weather officials have issued warnings for large parts of the region, urging people to get ready for challenging conditions.

According to Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC), snowfall will begin early Thursday morning and continue throughout the day. By Thursday evening, Edmonton could see between 10 to 20 centimeters of snow. Other areas in central and northern Alberta will likely experience similar amounts.

The weather agency warns that roads, highways, and sidewalks will become slippery and difficult to navigate as the snow piles up. Drivers should expect slow-moving traffic, especially during rush hour in urban areas.

"Snowfall is expected to become heavy at times starting early Thursday morning," the ECCC said. "Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways, and parking lots may become difficult to navigate due to accumulating snow."

People are advised to be extra cautious when driving, as visibility could be reduced in some areas. Authorities recommend allowing extra travel time and keeping emergency supplies in vehicles.

With winter making a surprise return, Albertans should prepare for possible disruptions. Staying updated on weather reports and road conditions will help everyone stay safe.
