Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said he is willing to speak with U.S. President Donald Trump, but only on Canada’s terms. Carney made it clear that he won’t accept any disrespect toward Canada’s sovereignty.
Carney, who became the leader of the ruling Liberal Party on March 9, automatically became the prime minister. Typically, newly elected Canadian leaders speak with the U.S. president shortly after taking office. However, Carney and Trump have yet to have their first conversation.
During a campaign stop in Newfoundland, Carney addressed the matter. “I’m available for a call, but you know, we’re going to talk on our terms as a sovereign country, not as what he pretends we are,” he said.
Carney’s remarks referred to Trump’s recent comments about Canada. The U.S. president has repeatedly threatened to impose tariffs on Canadian exports. He has also made remarks about annexing Canada, which Carney described as both disrespectful and unhelpful.
Carney suggested that Trump may be holding off on the call, possibly waiting to see the outcome of Canada’s general election. Despite the delay, Carney stressed that any conversation with Trump would have to respect Canada’s independence.
Carney’s firm stance comes as Canada prepares for a heated election campaign. He continues to highlight the importance of standing up for Canada’s interests, especially in dealing with its powerful southern neighbor.
