Hollywood has lost one of its most versatile actors. Val Kilmer, known for his roles in Top Gun, Batman Forever, and The Doors, passed away on Tuesday night in Los Angeles at the age of 65. His daughter, Mercedes Kilmer, confirmed his passing.

A Battle with Health Issues

Val Kilmer had been battling health complications for years. Diagnosed with throat cancer in 2014, he underwent multiple surgeries, including two tracheotomies, which affected his ability to speak. Despite surviving cancer, he later suffered from pneumonia, which ultimately led to his passing.

His son, Jack Kilmer, lent his voice to narrate Kilmer’s thoughts in the 2021 documentary Val, where he reflected on his life, career, and personal struggles.

Val Kilmer – A Hollywood Legend with Unmatched Range

Kilmer's career spanned decades, showcasing his versatility across various genres. He made his breakthrough in 1984’s Top Secret! and went on to star in classic films like Real Genius, Tombstone, and Heat.

His commitment to roles was legendary. While portraying Doc Holliday in Tombstone, he reportedly laid in ice to mimic the sensation of dying from tuberculosis. When playing Jim Morrison in The Doors, he immersed himself completely—wearing leather pants constantly and insisting on being called “Jim” on set.

Kilmer enjoyed a four-decade career on stage and screen, in a variety of leading and supporting roles in drama and comedy. Reuters

A Complex Reputation in Hollywood

Kilmer was often described as a dedicated but difficult actor. He had a reputation for clashing with directors, but he always defended himself, stating that his intensity was driven by a passion for his craft.

In his memoir, I'm Your Huckleberry, Kilmer acknowledged this perception but remained unapologetic about his artistic choices. Despite some tensions, many colleagues admired his work ethic and talent. Director Michael Mann, who worked with him on Heat, praised his range and dedication to his craft.

The Role Val Kilmer Almost Refused

One of Kilmer’s most famous roles, Iceman in Top Gun, nearly didn’t happen. He admitted in his memoir that he was initially uninterested in the film, but he ultimately took the role when promised a stronger character arc.

Kilmer reprised his role as Iceman in Top Gun: Maverick (2022), where technology was used to recreate his voice for his final on-screen appearance.

From Batman to Indie Films

After starring as Batman in Batman Forever (1995), Kilmer’s career took a different turn. He worked on smaller but critically acclaimed films like Spartan, The Salton Sea, and Wonderland.

Despite a turbulent career, his talent remained undeniable. Director Francis Ford Coppola, who worked with him on Twixt, called him “a joy to know” and praised his lifelong dedication to acting.

A Legacy That Lives On

Born in Los Angeles, Kilmer was the youngest student ever admitted to Juilliard’s drama program at just 17 years old. His love for storytelling was influenced by his late brother, Wesley, an aspiring filmmaker who passed away at 15.

Kilmer is survived by his two children, Mercedes and Jack, from his marriage to actress Joanne Whalley.

"I have no regrets," Kilmer told the AP in 2021. "I've witnessed and experienced miracles."
