Mon Mothma was once a quiet footnote in the Star Wars saga. A composed rebel senator with a brief appearance in Return of the Jedi, she delivered strategic lines and disappeared from focus. But in Season 2 of Andor, now streaming on Disney+, she becomes a character of complexity, emotion, and internal conflict.
At her daughter’s wedding, amid flashing lights and pounding beats, Mothma dances. But it’s not joy—it’s survival. Her smile masks turmoil. Moments earlier, she had agreed to sacrifice an old friend for the sake of the Rebel cause. Actress Genevieve O’Reilly calls it “a techno-galactic moment of internal chaos.”
She’s Dancing to Stop Herself from Screaming
O’Reilly explains that this moment is more than symbolic. It’s a visual cue of Mon’s unraveling. "She’s terrified and full of pain," the actress told the Associated Press. The senator’s controlled mask slips, revealing the emotional cost of rebellion.
From Background to Backbone of the Rebellion
Mon Mothma's journey isn’t just emotional—it’s central. Creator Tony Gilroy believes her struggle defines the show. “She has to be seen but can’t move. That’s the hardest journey,” he says.
The character first appeared in 1983, played by Caroline Blakiston. O'Reilly was cast as the younger version in 2005’s Revenge of the Sith, though her scenes ended up on the DVD extras. She returned for 2016’s Rogue One and voiced Mothma in animated series like Rebels and Ahsoka. But Andor Season 2 finally gives her the story depth she deserves.
O’Reilly says she feels seen. “That’s the gift every actor wants,” she shared.
A Dance Scene That Took Three Days to Shoot
The extravagant wedding scene, complete with a remixed soundtrack from Season 1, was Gilroy’s deliberate choice. He insisted on the lavish shoot to showcase Mothma’s spiral.
He praises O’Reilly’s range: “She’s a Steinway,” he said, comparing her to a fine piano. “She can do anything.”
Kleya Gets a Voice in Andor Season 2
Gilroy’s cast expansion doesn’t stop with Mothma. Elizabeth Dulau, who plays Kleya, Luthen Rael’s trusted ally, steps into the spotlight this season. Once a background player, Kleya now has a layered storyline and a growing presence.
“She could’ve been the sorcerer’s apprentice,” Gilroy said. “Instead, she turned out to be one of the greatest actors I’ve worked with.”
Bix Caleen: From Silent Support to Star Power
Adria Arjona returns as Bix Caleen, Cassian Andor’s romantic and revolutionary partner. Season 2 elevates her role from trauma survivor to action hero.
She begins as a rural rebel in hiding, then moves through pain, addiction, and healing. Her character faces physical threats too, including a disturbing scene of attempted assault by an imperial officer. Arjona says it reflects “the abuse of power in a galaxy far, far away.”
She also hinted at her last lines in the series. “It was the scariest moment of my career,” she said. “I was a mess.”
The Name’s Andor, But the Story Belongs to Many
Diego Luna, who stars as the titular Andor, acknowledges the ensemble. “It’s ironic that it’s called Andor,” he said. “It’s really about the community, about the collective.”
With women now taking center stage, Andor Season 2 becomes a richer, more human tale of rebellion, sacrifice, and identity.
