Doug Ford says some Hwy 407 tolls to be removed, gas tax cut made permanent. CTV News

In a bold move to ease financial pressure, Ontario is permanently cutting gas taxes and eliminating tolls on Highway 407 East. The Doug Ford government is pushing forward legislation aimed at keeping more money in people’s pockets, reducing commute costs, and supporting local businesses.

Permanent Gas Tax Cut Means Long-Term Relief at the Pumps

Premier Doug Ford announced the government’s plan to make the current gas and fuel tax cut permanent. The legislation, included in the upcoming 2025 Budget, aims to lock in the reduced rate of nine cents per litre. This tax relief—initially introduced in 2022—has already saved Ontarians over $1.7 billion.

By making the cut permanent, households are expected to continue saving about $115 each year. It's a move designed to fight inflation and soften the blow of rising costs, especially as global trade tensions raise prices on basic goods.

407 East Tolls to Be History by June 2025

In another significant step, the province will permanently remove tolls from the provincially owned portion of Highway 407 East. This stretch runs from Brock Road to Highway 35/115. Once in effect on June 1, 2025, daily commuters could save up to $7,200 annually.

This change follows the earlier removal of tolls on Highways 412 and 418. The province has also passed legislation banning any new tolls on public roads.

“We’re helping people save money while making travel faster and more affordable,” said Transportation Minister Prabmeet Sarkaria. “It’s about improving the quality of life and cutting commute times.”

Cutting Costs and Easing Daily Burdens

Ontario’s government is reinforcing its commitment to affordability with a series of cost-saving initiatives. These include:

  • Eliminating licence plate renewal fees
  • Scrapping licence plate stickers
  • Freezing fees for driver’s licences and Ontario Photo Cards

Combined with tax cuts, these steps have saved Ontarians over $1.8 billion in the past year alone.

Standing Strong Against Global Pressures

Ford emphasized that these measures are in response to the rising cost of living and looming U.S. tariffs. “Families and business owners are worried, and we’re acting,” he said. “This is about putting more money back where it belongs—in your wallet.”

Finance Minister Peter Bethlenfalvy echoed the sentiment. “We know how tough things have been,” he said. “Our government is working to lower costs and protect Ontario’s future.”

What’s Next for Ontario?

Further details on Ontario’s economic plan will be unveiled in the 2025 Budget, set to be released on May 15. The government promises more initiatives to grow the economy, protect jobs, and make Ontario the top choice for global investors.

As the province continues to take action, these permanent tax cuts and toll eliminations mark a decisive shift toward affordability, efficiency, and long-term economic resilience.
