Toronto police search for several suspects after a shooting in Lawrence Heights on Tuesday night. One man died, and five others were hurt.
Shooting Shakes Neighborhood
Police got a call around 8:30 p.m. about gunfire near Flemington and Zachary Roads, close to Ranee Avenue and Allen Road. When officers arrived, they found several people shot in an alley between a high-rise and Allen Road.
A man in his 40s died at the scene. Five others—four men and one woman—went to the hospital with injuries that aren’t life-threatening.
Suspects Still at Large
Police say they don’t have much information about who caused the shooting. They know there are several suspects, but they haven’t caught anyone yet. It’s unclear if the suspects escaped by car. Investigators keep working to figure out what happened.
Duty Senior Officer Baheer Sarvanandan said, “There’s no risk to public safety.”
Complex Crime Scene
Sarvanandan called the scene “large and complex.” While the shooting happened in an alley, police found victims in other nearby spots too.
When asked if the shooting was random or planned, Sarvanandan said the investigation is still open. Police have not found any guns yet.
Investigators set up a command post near Ranee Avenue and Flemington Road. They are asking witnesses to come forward and help with clues.
Witnesses Describe the Chaos
One high-rise resident, who wished to stay anonymous, said he heard 10 to 20 gunshots while in his bedroom. “It just was so loud that it came through,” he said.
He checked his balcony and saw many cars speeding away. Later, he found a “commotion” in the alley and “puddles of blood.”
“There was a lot of blood and a lot of people yelling and screaming,” he added. He also saw people trying to save the injured.
Another witness shared a video showing people lying on the ground while police and paramedics helped.
Mayor and Officials Respond
Toronto’s mayor, Olivia Chow, said she feels “disturbed” by the shooting. She thanked police, fire, and paramedic teams for their work at the difficult scene.
Councillor Mike Colle, who represents the area, said he was “very upset.” He called the shooting “wild” and said the community has had peace for years until now.
“It’s very, very disappointing and very, very upsetting to see this happen,” Colle said. “This peace broken by this incredible irresponsible use of guns.”
What’s Next?
Police keep searching for the suspects. They want anyone with information to come forward. The community hopes for answers and justice after this violent night.
