Two wildfires in Manitoba have joined to become a massive blaze. The combined fire is now about seven times larger than the city of Winnipeg, the provincial government said.
Biggest Fire Near Sherridon
The larger fire, called WE017, started near Sherridon. It covers roughly 307,781 hectares and is out of control. This fire is now the biggest in the province.
Officials confirmed that another fire, WE024, which was nearly 38,000 hectares near Flin Flon on June 4, has merged with WE017. Since June 5, the government reports their total size together.
Evacuations in Effect
Because of the growing fire, several communities must leave their homes. These mandatory evacuations are for safety as the wildfire spreads.
Another Large Fire in Manitoba
The government also mentioned a second big fire, EA061. It is about five times the size of Winnipeg, covering 203,720 hectares. This fire stretches from Bird River to Bissett and is also out of control.
Many Wildfires Still Burning
Manitoba Wildfire Service says 28 wildfires are still active in the province. They are working hard to manage and control these fires.
