Seven men from California face charges in what officials call the largest jewelry robbery in US history. They stole $100 million in gold, gems, and luxury watches. The theft happened nearly three years ago but puzzled investigators until now.
How the Heist Happened
The stolen items were on a Brinks truck moving between jewelry shows. The truck carried 73 bags of valuables and left a show near San Francisco. The suspects followed the truck for about 300 miles, from San Mateo to a rest stop in Lebec, California.
While one driver slept inside and another ate nearby, the robbers struck. They stole 24 bags filled with jewelry. Officials believe the thieves sawed off the truck’s padlock to get in. No weapons were used during the robbery.
Investigation and Arrests
Authorities revealed that one suspect watched the jewelry show for days before planning the robbery. The theft happened in the early hours of July 11, 2022. The truck was heading to another jewelry show in Pasadena when the robbery occurred.
Officials found some stolen jewelry during searches on June 16 this year. However, they have not said how much was recovered. The suspects’ exact method of breaking into the truck remains unclear.
Impact on Victims
Jerry Kroll, a lawyer for some jewelers who lost goods in the robbery, said many of his clients are older adults, some over 85 years old. He called the crime serious and said his clients would appreciate any recovered items.
The suspects have not publicly spoken, and it is unknown if they have lawyers. The investigation continues as authorities work to bring justice.
What’s Next?
The case is now in court. It shows how criminals planned carefully and targeted valuable goods without violence. The stolen items’ high value and the suspects’ long tracking of the truck make this heist stand out.
The police remind people that large crimes like this need time and careful work to solve. They hope the arrests will help recover more stolen goods and prevent future thefts.
