U.S. President Donald Trump announced Monday that Canada must pay $71 billion to join the Golden Dome defence system. This is $10 billion more than the $61 billion he mentioned earlier. Trump said, “They want to be a part of it... They’ll be in the dome.” The Golden Dome is a key defence project inspired by Israel’s Iron Dome missile shield.

What Is the Golden Dome?

The Golden Dome is designed to protect North America from missile attacks. Trump’s plan aims to build a strong defence shield similar to the one Israel uses. Canada’s Prime Minister, Mark Carney, has shown interest but has not agreed yet. Trump’s new price puts a heavy cost on Canada for joining the system.

Separate Deal Likely

Trump met with Canadian officials earlier on Monday to discuss trade and other issues. Both sides stayed quiet about the talks. They plan to finalize a deal within 30 days. However, Trump said the Golden Dome might not be part of that agreement. “We may make a separate deal on that,” he told reporters.

Tariffs and Trade Talk

During a photo session with Carney, Trump called himself a “tariff person” and confirmed tariffs on Canadian metals and goods will stay. These tariffs are on products not covered by the two countries’ free trade agreement. Trump noted that Carney suggested a “more complex idea” for trade, which Trump said was good but unlikely to happen fast.

He added, “They get too complex with the deals, and they never get done. We need speed.” Trump seems focused on quick deals rather than complicated trade talks.

Trump’s Bold Statements

Besides defence and trade, Trump jokingly mentioned he is still interested in making Canada a U.S. state. “I think it’s a much better deal for Canada,” he said, “but you know, it’s up to them.” He warned Canada will face high tariffs and must pay a lot for the Golden Dome.

What’s Next for Canada?

Prime Minister Carney now faces the tough choice of paying the steep price or negotiating further. The Golden Dome could strengthen Canada’s defence but at a very high cost. Trade talks continue with tariffs still in place, making the economic relationship tense.

With only a month left to finalize a deal, Canada must weigh the defence benefits against the financial burden. The next weeks will be crucial for both countries as they try to balance security, trade, and political interests.
