A woman drove up to a farm in St. Albert, Ontario, on Sunday and acted strangely, according to the farm’s owner. That woman, 34-year-old Rachel-Ella Todd, had just reported her three-year-old daughter missing. The farm owner didn’t think much of it at first but later realized something was wrong.

He only understood the full picture days later, when he saw online posts about the missing child and recognized the woman from his farm. He then called the police and shared what he had seen. His tip helped police locate the child near Highway 417.

Girl Found Alone by a Highway

On Wednesday afternoon, a drone spotted the girl sitting alone on the side of the highway. Police rushed to her and gave her water and fruit. She had been out in the open for more than three days without food or water. An officer said she was lucky to survive. He called it the first time in his 32-year career that he had seen something like this.

The child was taken to the hospital, where doctors said she was dehydrated but doing okay.

Amber Alert Debate

The man who spoke to the mother said there should have been an Amber Alert. He believes one could have helped find the girl faster. But police said the situation didn’t meet the criteria. To issue an Amber Alert, they must suspect an abduction, believe the child is in danger, and have helpful details to share publicly.

In this case, officials said those conditions weren’t fully met. Even so, people shared the girl’s photo widely, which helped spread awareness.

Mother Faces Charges

Police said the girl had likely been left alone by the road on purpose. They are still investigating but believe she was alone the entire time. The mother was arrested and charged with child abandonment. She will return to court soon for a bail hearing.

Her behavior before reporting the child missing raised concerns. In a video posted online, she was seen yelling while holding the child. The clip’s caption suggested she felt cornered or upset, but it’s unclear who she was addressing.

Community and Police Praised

More than 150 officers searched across two provinces. They used drones, helicopters, and ground teams. Many people are now calling their efforts heroic.

Nancy Duncan from the Missing Children’s Network praised the rescue. She called it “almost a miracle” and praised the empathy and teamwork shown by police. The girl’s father also thanked everyone who helped find his daughter. He asked for privacy as they focus on their child’s recovery.
