After years of silence and scandal, Ezra Miller is preparing to return to the big screen. The Flash star, who faced serious legal issues and public backlash, is now taking steps toward redemption—and a possible Hollywood revival.
Surprise Appearance that Sparked Buzz
Miller, who hasn’t appeared onscreen since 2023’s The Flash, made a quiet but noticeable return to the public eye at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival. The actor attended in support of filmmaker Lynne Ramsay, a longtime friend and collaborator.
Ramsay directed Miller in the critically acclaimed 2011 film We Need to Talk About Kevin. The bond between the two remains strong. Miller described her as “one of the greatest living filmmakers” and “one of my closest friends in the world” during a conversation with Italian media outlet Lo Speciale Giornale.
Vampire Role Marks Miller’s Return
It’s not just a friendly reunion. Ramsay has confirmed that Miller will headline her upcoming film, a vampire-themed story they are co-writing together. Miller is enthusiastic about the project, calling it their likely return vehicle.
“I’ve been writing a lot,” Miller said. “Because writing is something you can do in solitude. And solitude has been kind to me.”
Relationship with Acting Remains Cautious
Despite the upcoming project, Miller admits their connection to the film world is not what it used to be.
When asked about their current feelings toward cinema, Miller said simply, “Tentative—I’d say on tentative grounds.”

From Red Carpets to Rock Bottom
Miller's fall from grace began long before the headline-making chaos of 2022. A 2020 video surfaced showing them choking a woman in an Iceland bar. That incident sparked growing concerns, but the situation escalated dramatically two years later.
In 2022, Miller faced multiple allegations of abuse, assault, and grooming minors. They were arrested several times across various U.S. states, including a widely reported burglary charge in Vermont. Some charges were eventually dropped following plea deals.
An Apology and a Step Toward Healing
Miller has publicly acknowledged their troubled past. In a statement to EW, they expressed remorse and said they had been “suffering complex mental health issues” during what they called “a time of intense crisis.”
They also confirmed they are receiving ongoing treatment and focusing on personal recovery.
Looking Ahead, Grateful for the Pain
Now, three years removed from the height of the controversy, Miller is reflective.
“I’m really, really grateful for the lessons that came with that abyss,” they shared.
Still, they remain critical of the industry that once celebrated them. “You find yourself in deep relation to people who don’t care about you or your well-being,” Miller said. Yet they also admitted, “I hold a lot of remorse and lamentation for what happened during that time.”
As Miller prepares for their next role, all eyes are once again on the actor—this time, to see if they can rewrite their story.
