Ocean Ramsey featured in the Netflix show "Shark Whisperer”. Netflix

Professional diver Ocean Ramsey has revealed a unique way she trained to handle shark encounters. She learned how to redirect sharks by practicing with animals that also require trust and body awareness—horses and stingrays.

In a recent video, she shared how working with horses helped her understand how to read silent body language, manage energy, and stay calm—skills she now uses when swimming with sharks. Horses, like sharks, can respond strongly if they sense tension or fear. Ramsey said, “They can feel your energy. So it's important to stay calm and clear.”

Stingrays Helped Build Her Confidence Underwater

Alongside horses, Ramsey swam with stingrays to gain more control over her movements and awareness underwater. She called it “dancing” with the stingrays—moving fluidly, learning grace, and staying alert to everything around her.

This underwater flow became a key part of her safety method when dealing with sharks. “Graceful, calm movement helps sharks feel less threatened,” she explained.

What Is Shark Redirection?

Ramsey uses a method she calls redirection. She developed it after being rushed by a shark. The technique involves placing a hand on the shark's head, stiffening the arm to create space, and guiding it away by touching behind the jaw or near the gills.

She made it clear that this is only for emergencies. “It’s not something people should try unless they’re trained,” she said. “I only share this so people know what to do if they ever need it.”

Gentle Touch, Clear Energy

Ramsey explained redirection isn’t aggressive. It’s about “leveraging for space” while staying gentle. If a person is calm, the shark may react calmly too. “Animals read energy. If you're tense, they may respond to that,” she added.

Her goal is to educate, not entertain. “I post these videos to help people,” she said. “If you panic and swim away, it can trigger the shark to chase.”

She urges people not to copy what she does, but to understand how to react calmly in dangerous situations. “This info could help save someone one day,” she said.

From Instagram to Documentary

Ramsey’s work has gained millions of followers online, but her message goes beyond social media. A new documentary titled Ocean Whisperer was released on June 30. It gives a deeper look into her life and work, showing how she connects with sharks in the wild—often without any cage protection.

The film shows her controversial approach up close, sparking debate over whether it’s safe or wise. But Ramsey says her goal is simple: change how people see sharks.

Changing Fear into Respect

Ramsey believes sharks aren’t monsters. “They’re predators, but we need them,” she said. Her mission is to help people understand sharks better, so humans and sharks can safely share the ocean.
