Charlize Theron returns in the action-packed sequel The Old Guard 2. AP

Charlize Theron returns in The Old Guard 2, but the magic is missing. The film hits Netflix five years after the first movie thrilled viewers in 2020. Back then, it brought action, global settings, and a strong storyline. But this time, things fall apart fast.

Delayed release weakens the story

This sequel was approved in 2021 and began filming in 2022. But it took three years to arrive. The long gap means most people don’t remember the first film clearly. Even Netflix had to post recaps to remind fans. The plot is confusing and hard to follow, especially if you haven’t seen the original recently.

Too much explanation, not enough thrill

The Old Guard is based on a comic. It needs a lot of explanation to set things up. This makes the first half of the movie feel slow. What should be a fun action flick feels like a chore to watch. The 97-minute runtime might sound short, but it still feels like a rush to finish.

Charlize Theron does her best

Theron plays Andy, a warrior who lost her immortality. The story follows her and her team trying to stop two new enemies. Ngô Thanh Vân plays a former friend turned enemy. Uma Thurman joins as a villain who hates humans. But Thurman barely gets screen time, making her role feel like a tease.

Theron gives a strong performance despite the weak writing. But she doesn’t get the depth or challenge she deserves. Her past films prove she can handle complex roles. Here, she’s stuck in simple action scenes with little emotional weight.

Lack of connection and queer erasure

The original movie had strong LGBTQ+ representation. In this sequel, that part is nearly erased. A powerful kiss between immortal lovers is replaced by a forehead touch. Andy’s relationship with another female character is left unclear. Their connection in the comic is romantic. In the film, it’s reduced to vague friendship.

A puzzling ending with no answers

The worst part comes at the end. The movie finishes with a cliffhanger, hinting at a third part. But there’s no word if The Old Guard 3 will happen. The film doesn’t just leave questions. It feels completely unfinished. Viewers are left confused and disappointed.

Even Theron and Chiwetel Ejiofor, both talented actors, can’t save this film. Uma Thurman had potential but was barely used. The original director, Gina Prince-Bythewood, is replaced by Victoria Mahoney. The change shows—action scenes feel flat, and emotional depth is gone.
