The Sandman is back with season two, and Morpheus — also called Dream — once again takes center stage. Played by Tom Sturridge, Dream is a moody, gothic ruler of dreams who drifts through magical realms with the energy of someone attending a meeting he doesn’t want to be at.

He opens the season by facing a tough moment: apologizing to his former lover Nada, whom he banished to hell 10,000 years ago. From there, the story follows him as he attempts to fix broken relationships and bring his dream world back into balance.

Big Ideas, Flat Delivery
The series explores bold topics and includes powerful myths like those of Lucifer, Orpheus, and Eurydice. Yet somehow, every exciting moment feels heavy and dull. Dream doesn’t react with passion or wonder — instead, he sulks through even the most dramatic scenes.

Lucifer, played by Gwendoline Christie, adds some intrigue as a tired ruler of hell, but even her scenes feel slow. Dream hosts a gathering of underworld beings in his shadowy palace. Then he reconnects with family members he's ignored for centuries.

Visuals Can’t Save the Gloom
The show looks stylish, but the dark lighting and gothic tone feel overdone. Dream always appears in deep shadows, dressed in black, with hollow cheeks and dramatic hair. While his look matches his title, his presence lacks charm.

Even when he uses his powers — like destroying Thor’s hammer or helping Shakespeare — he shows no excitement. These moments should be grand, but Dream treats them like chores. Every chance for fun or wonder disappears under layers of seriousness.

Myths and Messages Feel Wasted
The show borrows stories from different religions and cultures, including Greek and Norse myths. But it doesn’t explore them deeply. One part focuses on Orpheus, who is shown as Dream’s son. After a quick retelling of Orpheus and Eurydice’s tragedy, the series tries to add something new, mostly to showcase a talking severed head.

Another episode shows Dream meeting a transgender friend in New York. The story has a good message but delivers it without emotion or creativity.

Dialogue Falls Flat
The writing doesn’t help. Dream speaks in phrases meant to sound deep, but they land awkwardly. Quotes like, “Tales and dreams are the shadow truths that will endure,” and “Hell is heaven’s reflection,” feel forced. They sound more like social media captions than wise words from a powerful being.

Even the talking dog voiced by Steve Coogan fails to lighten the mood. His lines aren’t funny, and the humor feels forced.

A Show Full of Promise, But Lacking Heart
The Sandman has a great concept. A character who shapes dreams could do anything. But the show avoids fun, wonder, or risk. It buries its best ideas in sadness and long speeches. What could be magical becomes lifeless.
