Police in Hamilton have released the name of a teenager wanted in connection with a deadly shooting that happened downtown on Friday, July 11, 2025. CTV

A 17-year-old boy has been named as the suspect in a weekend shooting in Hamilton that left one woman dead. The shooting happened near Jackson Square shopping centre on King Street East, close to MacNab and James streets. It occurred just before 5:30 p.m. when the area was busy with people.

Teen Suspect Identified
Police say the teenager, identified as Mackale Lavoie, met with three individuals in the downtown core. Investigators believe these people were the intended targets. During the meeting, Lavoie allegedly pulled out a weapon and began shooting. One of the people was hit but survived.

Innocent Woman Killed
Tragically, a 26-year-old woman named Belinda Sarodie was also shot. She had no connection to the conflict and was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. Officers say Lavoie continued shooting as he left and struck Sarodie. She died at the scene. The first male victim, though injured, is expected to recover.

Charges and Warning to Public
The teen now faces one count of second-degree murder and two counts of attempted murder. Police are actively searching for him. A special court order allows authorities to release his name and photo despite his age, which usually would be protected under youth privacy laws.

What Police Are Asking
Officers urge the public not to approach Lavoie if spotted. They ask anyone who knows where he might be to contact them right away. Call Hamilton Police Service at 905-546-4925 or dial 911 in case of emergency.

Ongoing Investigation
The case remains open. Officers are still gathering details and looking for more witnesses or evidence. Authorities stress that the suspect should be considered dangerous. They continue to search the area and are reviewing footage from nearby cameras.
