Donald Trump is under growing pressure from his own supporters after dismissing public concern over the Jeffrey Epstein files as a “hoax.” Many longtime Trump fans, frustrated by the president’s response, posted videos online showing them burning their red "Make America Great Again" hats.
This reaction came just days after a high-profile lawmaker from his own party demanded that the government release all remaining files connected to Epstein. That lawmaker, once seen as a loyal Trump supporter, now leads the call for transparency.
Top Republicans Want Files Released
Trump’s former vice-president, Mike Pence, added to the pressure. He told a news outlet, “I think the time has come for the administration to release all of the files regarding Jeffrey Epstein’s investigation and prosecution.”
Laura Loomer, a frequent adviser to Trump, also pushed for a special counsel to handle the case. “This is clearly not a hoax,” she said, noting that Epstein’s associate Ghislaine Maxwell is serving a 20-year prison sentence.
Even Senator Josh Hawley, a well-known Trump supporter, questioned why the justice department hasn’t revealed more about Epstein’s clients. He asked for Maxwell to testify publicly.
Disagreements Inside Trump’s Circle
Another rare break came from House Speaker Mike Johnson. He urged the attorney general to explain why the promised files still haven’t been released. Earlier this year, the attorney general hinted she had a list of Epstein’s clients, only to later deny it. That contradiction has sparked anger from both the public and lawmakers.
Meanwhile, House Republicans blocked two attempts this week by Democrats to force a release of all Epstein files within 30 days. Only one Republican voted in favor of it.
Federal Prosecutor Fired
Tensions increased when news broke that federal prosecutor Maurene Comey had been fired. She had worked on both Epstein and Maxwell’s cases. The justice department gave no reason for her dismissal. Her exit raised even more questions about the case and added to the public’s mistrust.
Trump Tries to Shift Focus
Despite the backlash, Trump stuck to his position. In a meeting with the crown prince of Bahrain, he criticized his fellow Republicans for focusing on Epstein. “Instead of talking about our great achievements,” he said, “they’re wasting time on a guy who died years ago.”
Trump’s message, however, didn’t calm his base. Many MAGA supporters feel betrayed and believe the government is hiding something.
Public Demands Answers
A new poll showed that nearly 70% of Americans think the federal government is covering up information about Epstein’s clients. About 25% said they weren’t sure. Only a small number believed there had been full transparency.
Epstein died in prison in 2019. His death was ruled a suicide. His former partner, Ghislaine Maxwell, was later convicted of sex trafficking and is now serving a 20-year sentence.
