A café in Surrey, B.C., owned by Bollywood actor and comedian Kapil Sharma, has been shot at for the second time in less than a month. Police were back at Kap’s Café in the Newton area early Thursday after bullets shattered several windows during the overnight attack.
Possible Firebomb Found
Forensic teams examined what they believe to be a “Molotov cocktail-type” device found outside the café. Officers responded around 4:40 a.m. after receiving reports of gunfire. Staff Sgt. Lindsey Houghton confirmed no injuries, even though workers were inside during the attack.
Linked to Earlier Shooting
This latest shooting comes just weeks after a similar attack on July 10, only days after the café opened on 120 Street. Investigators believe the two incidents are connected. In both cases, staff were present but unharmed. Police have not yet determined a motive and say all possibilities remain open.
Videos Circulating on Social Media
The July shooting was filmed from the shooter’s perspective and posted online, showing 10 shots fired from inside a vehicle. A new video from Thursday’s attack appears to show a gunman standing outside a vehicle and firing several shots at the café. Investigators have secured the footage as evidence.
Controversy Over Blame
Media outlets in India linked the first attack to a Khalistani separatist leader, but Sikhs for Justice called those claims “a disinformation campaign” aimed at undermining their movement for an independent Sikh state.
Police Call for Witnesses
Authorities are urging witnesses or anyone with related video to contact the Surrey Police Service at 604-599-0502. “The people who are behind these incidents clearly have absolutely no regard for public safety,” Houghton said.
Community Safety Concerns
Elenore Sturko, B.C.’s Conservative shadow minister for public safety, said recent shootings and extortion cases in Surrey are making residents feel unsafe. She suggested improving traffic camera resolution to help identify suspects, though she later deleted the post.
