A fast-moving wildfire forced hundreds of people to leave a popular campground near Port Alberni, B.C., on Monday night. The Mount Underwood fire erupted southwest of the city and quickly grew in size. Officials ordered the evacuation of the China Creek Campground and Marina, sending campers and boaters scrambling to safety.

Fire Expands Rapidly

The blaze started at about 50 hectares around 7 p.m. Just two hours later, it reached 150 hectares. By 10 p.m., the fire had exploded to 630 hectares. Crews reported dangerous Rank 4 and Rank 5 fire behaviour, meaning it was burning fiercely on the ground and shooting flames into tree tops.

Road Closures and Safety Concerns

The Bamfield Main Road between Port Alberni and Bamfield shut down as crews investigated the cause. This cut access to both directions, affecting residents and travellers. Mike Carter, co-CEO of the Port Alberni Port Authority, confirmed about 300 people had to leave the campground. “It’s been fully evacuated, and we’re watching to see what happens overnight,” he said.

Focus on Safety

Carter noted concerns about possible damage to tents, RVs, and boats. Strong winds and high temperatures worsened the fire’s spread. But he stressed that protecting people was the main priority. “The city of Port Alberni isn’t in danger right now,” he said. “Still, people should keep bags ready and stay alert.”

Emergency Response

The Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District activated its emergency operations centre shortly after 9 p.m. Crews worked late into the night. Helicopters with night-vision equipment attacked the blaze from the air, while teams on the ground focused on protecting buildings and structures.

Location and Visibility

The wildfire is burning about 12 kilometres south of Port Alberni, a city of roughly 19,000 people. Thick smoke was visible from nearby towns. Officials said that from certain viewpoints, it might look like the fire was part of the Wesley Ridge blaze, but they confirmed it is a separate incident.
