Kelly Clarkson is facing one of the most difficult moments of her life, holding her children close after the death of their father, Brandon Blackstock. The 48-year-old talent manager passed away on August 7 following a private, three-year battle with cancer.

A source close to the singer says the loss has left her “devastated” for their two children — River, 11, and Remington, 9. Though their marriage ended years ago, Clarkson never stopped protecting the relationship her kids had with their dad.

“When she learned about his illness, she quietly shielded him for the children’s sake,” the source shared. “She always handled things with grace. Earlier this year, it became clear his health was fading, and it broke her heart for the kids.”

A Painful Divorce but Shared Commitment to the Children

Clarkson and Blackstock married in 2013 and divorced in 2020, finalizing their split two years later. Their separation was far from easy, marked by legal disputes and emotional strain. But those close to Clarkson say she made a conscious choice to put her children’s needs above all else.

“The divorce was painful and complicated,” the source explained. “But she wanted her kids to have the best relationship possible with their father. She never spoke negatively about him to them.”

In 2023, Clarkson spoke openly about how she encourages her children to express their feelings, especially during moments of sadness.

“I ask my kids every night if they’re happy,” she said during a podcast appearance. “If they’re not, I ask what could make them happier. Sometimes they say, ‘I just wish Mommy and Daddy were in the same house.’ I understand — I’m from a divorced family too. But I tell them they are loved by both of us, always.”

Navigating the Challenges of Co-Parenting

Clarkson had also shared that co-parenting with Blackstock wasn’t always easy. In a 2021 episode of her talk show, she admitted that while they agreed on major parenting decisions, being apart made things challenging.

“It’s tough when you’re not together all the time,” she said. “But as long as the focus stays on the kids and their best interests, we’re both committed.”

A Private Battle, A Peaceful Goodbye

Blackstock’s passing was confirmed by the family on August 7 in a heartfelt statement.

“It is with great sadness that we share Brandon Blackstock has passed away,” it read. “He bravely battled cancer for more than three years and passed away peacefully, surrounded by family. We ask for privacy during this difficult time.”

Until his death, Blackstock had kept his diagnosis private. Clarkson acknowledged his illness a day earlier, announcing she was postponing her Las Vegas residency to be fully present for her children.

“While I normally keep my personal life private, my children’s father has been ill,” she wrote on Instagram. “Right now, I need to be with them. I’m so grateful for everyone’s kindness and understanding.”

Choosing Family Above All Else

Sources reveal Clarkson had already stepped back from work earlier this year, missing several episodes of The Kelly Clarkson Show to focus on family as Blackstock’s health worsened.

Friends say she’s now channeling her strength into helping River and Remington navigate their grief.

“She’s heartbroken for them,” a friend shared. “Her focus is making sure they feel safe, loved, and supported every step of the way.”

Through loss and heartache, Clarkson continues to show the same quiet strength that has defined her — a mother determined to guide her children through the hardest of goodbyes.
