A Canadian soldier deployed in Latvia has been reported missing since Tuesday. The Department of National Defence confirmed the disappearance in a statement, adding that both Canadian and Latvian authorities are working together to locate him.

Soldier Identified
Officials identified the missing soldier as Warrant Officer George Hohl. He serves as a vehicle technician based in Edmonton. Hohl is currently part of the aviation battalion with the NATO Multinational Brigade in Latvia. Lt.-Gen. Steve Boivin, commander of Canadian Joint Operations Command, shared the details on Thursday.

Last Known Location
Authorities last saw Hohl in Ādaži, a town in Latvia that hosts NATO operations. His disappearance has triggered an immediate investigation, with search efforts now underway across the area.

Joint Efforts in Search
Latvian police are leading the investigation. Canadian Forces Military Police and NATO personnel are assisting. Officials say search teams are “actively conducting operations using all available resources” to track Hohl’s whereabouts.

Family Support
Military officials confirmed that Hohl’s family has been notified. His loved ones are receiving support and updates as the search continues. Boivin stressed that ensuring the family’s well-being remains a priority while the investigation moves forward.

NATO Presence in Latvia
Canada contributes to NATO’s mission in Latvia as part of its efforts to strengthen collective defence in the region. Hundreds of Canadian troops are stationed there alongside soldiers from other allied nations. Hohl’s role as a vehicle technician supports the operational readiness of the battalion.

Community Concern
The disappearance has raised concern among the Canadian Armed Forces community and the wider NATO mission. Soldiers stationed abroad face unique challenges, and any missing member sparks worry both at home and among allies.

Ongoing Search
Officials have not released further details on the circumstances of Hohl’s disappearance. However, search efforts remain active and widespread. Authorities continue to coordinate across multiple levels to bring clarity and find answers.
