Royal Caribbean’s ambitious $600 million port project in Mahahual, Mexico, is moving ahead with strong support from local leaders. The plan, announced in November 2024 by Royal Caribbean International President and CEO Michael Bayley alongside Governor Mara Lezama, aims to create Perfect Day Mexico at the Mahahual cruise port.

What the project includes
Perfect Day Mexico will welcome up to 21,000 guests daily. It expects between 2.6 million and 5 million visitors a year. The project will create more than 1,000 jobs during construction through 2027, with nearly another 1,000 jobs once it opens. The Maya Tren will connect to the port, improving access for travellers.

Royal Caribbean has already taken over operations at the Costa Maya Cruise Port in Mahahual. Management began in July, marking the first step in the redevelopment.

Local leaders show support
The Chetumal National Chamber of Commerce (Canaco) confirmed its support for the project this week. Leaders see strong job creation as a key benefit for the region.

“Royal Caribbean’s investment will be essential in the reactivation of the local and regional economy, strengthening the supply chain in various business areas that will meet both the demands of the staff who will be working there and the requirements for building the infrastructure,” said Canaco President Amir Efrén Padilla Espadas.

He added that environmental care remains a top priority. “It [the project] will be based on environmental protection criteria, one of the fundamental commitments negotiated by the governor to attract this multi-million-dollar project. In fact, we know that Royal Caribbean considers respect for the environment and community social inclusion.”

New interest from other developers
The area is drawing interest from other investors as well. In June, another developer submitted environmental impact statements for two new projects, Lotes Norte Costa Maya and Lotes Sur Costa Maya. These plans include 24 boutique hotels just outside Mahahual, showing growing confidence in the destination.

What visitors can expect
Perfect Day Mexico will include diverse attractions. Conservation areas will protect the environment, while four berths will accommodate large cruise ships. Guests will enjoy a waterpark, the world’s longest lazy river, and premium beach club options. Adults-only areas will provide quieter escapes, ensuring experiences for all travellers.

Looking ahead
With official backing, the project is set to transform Mahahual into a top global cruise destination. It blends large-scale tourism with job growth and community involvement, creating new opportunities for the region.
