The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has confirmed a salmonella outbreak linked to dog food and treats in Alberta and British Columbia. So far, at least 27 people have fallen ill after contact with contaminated pet products. Officials are urging pet owners to handle dog food safely and watch for symptoms.

Illnesses Reported
Affected individuals have reported common salmonella symptoms, including diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps. CFIA noted that most of the cases involved people who handled or fed their pets with the recalled products. No deaths have been reported, but health authorities warn that young children, older adults, and people with weak immune systems are at higher risk.

Products Under Investigation
The agency is investigating several dog food brands and treats sold across Canada. Pet owners are advised to check the CFIA website for an up-to-date list of affected products. “If you have any of the recalled dog food or treats, do not feed them to your pets and discard them safely,” the CFIA said in a statement.

Safety Measures for Pet Owners
Experts emphasize the importance of hygiene when handling pet food. Wash hands thoroughly after feeding pets, cleaning bowls, or touching packaging. Avoid letting pets lick faces, and clean surfaces that come into contact with dog food. These steps help reduce the risk of spreading salmonella to humans.

Impact on Pets
While the main concern is human illness, contaminated dog food can also make pets sick. Signs of salmonella in dogs include vomiting, diarrhea, and decreased appetite. Veterinarians advise contacting a clinic if pets show symptoms after consuming affected food.

Ongoing Investigation
The CFIA continues to investigate the source of contamination. They are working with manufacturers and distributors to remove affected products from shelves and prevent further illnesses. “We are taking this seriously and coordinating with provincial health authorities,” the agency said.

Public Guidance
Health officials urge Canadians to stay informed and follow safety recommendations. “Handle pet food carefully and report any illness to your local health authority,” CFIA advised. The agency is also monitoring the situation closely to ensure no additional outbreaks occur.
