United Airlines planes wait on the runway at Chicago O'Hare Airport on August 8, 2025, during a temporary flight pause caused by technical problems. CBS

United Airlines stopped all flights leaving the U.S. and Canada on Tuesday night. The airline asked the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to issue a ground stop because of a technical problem. The pause lasted about 30 minutes.

United said it had a “brief connectivity issue” just before midnight Central time but flights have now returned to normal.

Repeat technical trouble

This is the second time in less than two months United has asked to stop flights due to a technical issue. In early August, the airline had to halt departures at major U.S. airports, including Newark, Denver, Houston, and Chicago. That ground stop lasted several hours.

Back then, United said a “technology issue” caused many delays across its system.

Impact on passengers

During the August event, many travelers faced long waits and cancellations. United is one of the biggest airlines in North America, so these pauses affect thousands of people.

The recent half-hour stop was much shorter, and the airline acted quickly to fix the problem. Still, any delay can disrupt travel plans and cause frustration.

What went wrong?

United has not shared specific details about the technology problem behind this latest ground stop. The airline simply called it a “connectivity issue.” Experts say such problems often relate to communication systems that connect flights with air traffic control.

Technical glitches like this highlight how much airlines depend on complex technology to keep planes moving safely and on time.

Looking ahead

United’s quick response helped keep this disruption short. The airline says it is working to prevent similar issues in the future.

Customers are urged to check their flight status before heading to the airport, especially when such ground stops happen.

While these interruptions are rare, they show how modern air travel can face challenges beyond weather or mechanical problems.

United Airlines briefly stopped all flights leaving the U.S. and Canada on Tuesday due to a technical problem. The pause lasted about 30 minutes. It was the second time in two months the airline faced a similar issue, causing delays at major airports. United fixed the problem quickly and returned to normal operations. Passengers should stay updated on flight changes.
